Statement on behalf of the Diocese of Madison on Grand Blanc Church Shooting

MADISON – It is grievous to find ourselves once again condemning another act of horrific violence against families peacefully gathered in worship. I ask the faithful of the Diocese of Madison and all people of good will to pray for those affected by Sunday’s attack on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township in Michigan. May the Lord bring healing to the injured and comfort to the families who mourn the tragic loss of a loved one. In addition to fervent prayers for peace in our country, we must also commit to building a culture of peace where the profound sacredness of all life is respected. Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace, pray for us, our nation, and our world.

Bishop of Madison

St. Pier Giorgio Frassati and St. Carlo Acutis, pray for us.

The greatest risk in life is to waste it by not seeking to follow God's plan, Pope Leo XIV said, proclaiming two new saints -- two young laymen of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Happy Independence Day! Today, let us give thanks and pray for our country, that we may truly be a nation where the rights of all are upheld, where religion and devotion are free to flourish, and where human dignity is protected.

"Father of all nations and ages, We recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations; for what has been achieved we give you thanks, for the work that still remains we ask your help, and as you have called us from many peoples to be one nation, grant that, under your providence, our country may share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen." (the Collect for Independence Day, from the Roman Missal)

Have a safe, happy, and restful holiday!

Bishop Donald J. Hying joins the bishops of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Catholic Conference in decrying the failure of the Wisconsin Supreme Court to protect the most vulnerable. Today’s Wisconsin State Supreme Court decision is a travesty of justice, a contortion of legal logic, and a tragic defeat for the dignity of human life in the womb.

The Catholic Church will not cease in its efforts to ensure that every human life is protected and respected. The intrinsic value and dignity of a human person can never be taken away, even by a court decision that defies logic. We must continue to defend life.

March for Life Wisconsin has been rescheduled to Saturday, July 26. This is due to the recently organized, national mass demonstrations this Saturday, June 14, which are expected to draw thousands marching up to and around the State Capitol. Streets around the Capitol will also be closed which will make movement very difficult. In the interest of ensuring the safety of attendees, including families with children, this joyful and peaceful march to protect every human life has been rescheduled to 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, on the State St.steps at the State Capitol in Madison.
