So I need suggestions on how to fix this hazardous drop off in our kitchen.

Our split level home has this drop off from the kitchen to lower level. Since we moved in, it has scared me that someone will fall down it. I just had a baby and am now committed to doing something here to make it safer. I will be hiring someone to do the work, I just need to figure out what i want to do. Iā€™d really appreciate any suggestions! ā˜ŗļø Bonus if a baby gate could be put up.

We recently bought a new build so we are starting from scratch. Iā€™m sure I will offend a lot of folks, but we are minimalists with a touch of drama. Iā€™m wanting to paint the doors and ceiling black (Or charcoal? Paint suggestions?), but I have no idea where to go from there. Rugs? Wall hangings? Entry furniture? All suggestions are welcome! We are looking for a stain color to pull the lighter brown out of these floors so they look less gray. This sample is NOT it!!!! For reference, this stain is Minwax Weathered Oak on a piece of white oak. Does anyone have any stain suggestions that would go with this flooring?
