On May 17th the oldest national nonprofit dedicated solely to the health and wellness of Black women and girls hosted Power Play at Pittsburgh Yards in Atlanta. This event from the Black Women's Health Imperative commemorated National Women's Health Week and included a community conversation moderated by award-winning journalist Rose Scott of WABE radio station.
Panelists included Kimberlyn Carter, CEO and Executive Director of Represent Georgia and Shana Scott, JD, MPH, who is Vice President of Impact for the American Heart Association - Metro Atlanta.
About the Panelists:
As a public health leader, Shana Scott has worked at the intersection of public health, law, community advocacy, and policy for more than 20 years. She previously served as Director of Compliance for Barnes Healthcare Services and before that was the Deputy Director of the Office of Policy, Systems, and Environmental Change at the Georgia Department of Public Health.
In that role, Shana worked alongside state leaders, elected officials, health system leaders, and the community to develop and implement sustainable health outcomes for Georgia’s citizens. Shana was also responsible for engaging internal and external partners on policy and systems change efforts for chronic disease prevention while overseeing over $10 million in federal and state awards.
Outside of her professional experience, Shana sits on the board of directors for HealthMPowers, Women United – United Way of Atlanta, and she enjoys working with future public health leaders. She has taught health policy and policy evaluation methods at the University of Georgia since 2018 and holds a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University Chicago School of Law with a master’s degree in public health from Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Kimberlyn Carter's professional background spans corporate, political, and advocacy spheres. She has worked as a Corporate Trainer, Director of Product Management, Director of Strategic Partnerships, and Chief Strategist for various electoral, advocacy, and corporate campaigns—including mayoral, congressional, and presidential races. She has participated in three global political residencies for women in South Africa, Canada, and Mexico.
An entrepreneur and Angel Investor, Kimberlyn is dedicated to mentoring Black women business owners. Her latest venture, Coach Carter’s Daughter, is an empowering coaching series focused on leadership, crisis communications, and innovative branding strategies. Her first international business venture, KC Imports, includes partnerships with ateliers in Ghana, Sierra Leone, and South Africa. KCI will sell products exclusively handcrafted in Africa.
Kimberlyn Carter is passionate about building power, training new leaders, and ensuring that Black youth continue to be the driving force of transformational change in the world.
