Hummingbird fight! While photographing these juvenile red throateds yesterday, the fights for their favorite flowers were well under way. I had no idea I had captured this until I loaded my files as the zipping in was so darn fast. Their favorite flowers? Yesterday was crocosmia and bee balm (red and bright pinky-red).

Yesterday morning! Female ruby throated hummingbird coming in for some crocosmia nectar in my garden. Between butterflies, bees and hummingbirds, my garden is feeding a bevy of summer beauties. I can sit here for hours in the morning and just take it in.

Tiger Swallowtail flitting and flying through my bee balm this week. I’ve seen so many tiger swallowtails this year, as many as monarchs. Staging the garden with pollinators over the years is hopefully creating a ‘must see destination’ for these beauties!

My butterflies keep arriving and flitting about. Yesterday’s cabbage butterfly was dancing in our hazy morning light on the catmint flower. There’s just something about sitting in the grass and getting hypnotized by my garden guests. Hope you enjoy!

And just like that, July has turned into butterfly month in my backyard. Every day tiger swallowtails along with other butterfly (and birds too) species. They love coneflowers! Seeing these colorful beauties flit across my butterfly gardens just makes the heart happy. Hope you enjoy!

Today our beautiful, golden summer light is shrouded in smoke. There are communities, forests and so much more facing unimaginable loss. Throughout this storm, resiliency will endure, hope will return. Support each other. Hold onto hope. Respect nature. Show and give compassion.

Today’s story in Michigan is the smoke from all the wildfires west of us. Since I’m not out in it taking a moment to share another smoke-filled sunrise from a different time. Breathe safely.

It’s summer in Michigan which means it’s time to chase butterflies (with my telephoto lens do I don’t disturb them) in my garden. Monarchs are visiting my droves of native milkweed and it just makes my heart happy.

Cooling down our 80 degree Michigan heat with a cool hued abstract of cattail leaves in the woods this summer. As much as I love the pinks, oranges and reds, there’s something about those cool tones that create an immediate, calming vibe.
