🎶 On This Day in Music History, July 25th, 1959-
At just 13 years old, Dolly Parton stepped onto the stage of the Grand Ole Opry for the very first time. Introduced by Johnny Cash, she sang George Jones’ “You Gotta Be My Baby”- and brought the house down. The audience was so moved by her performance, she received three encores that night.

It was a star-making moment for the young girl from East Tennessee and a powerful early glimpse of the legendary career to come. Even at 13, Dolly’s talent, charm, and unmistakable voice were already lighting up the stage.

🎛 Gear Talk: Ampeg B-15S
Our B-15S is a studio staple- a 1970s tube amp with all the warmth and weight you want from a vintage Ampeg, plus a little extra muscle. With 60 watts of tube power and dual channels, it gives you more headroom than the classic B-15N while keeping that rich, buttery tone intact.

It’s perfect for bass, but don’t sleep on it for keys or guitar if you’re chasing vintage vibe. Heavy, reliable, and always sounds right.

🎙️ On This Day in Music History, July 18th, 1953,
An 18-year-old truck driver named Elvis Presley walked into Memphis Recording Service (now known as Sun Records) and paid $3.98 to record two songs: “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin.”

It was his very first known recording, made as a gift for his mother — and unknowingly, the moment that sparked a legendary career.

🎧Check out those first recordings here:

This story has inspired a recording event of our own… and it’s one you won’t want to miss.

Gear Talk 🎙️
Let’s talk about a true studio workhorse: the AKG C414 B-XLS.

With nine polar patterns, super clean detail, and a wide dynamic range, this mic handles everything from vocals and acoustic instruments to drums and room mics. It’s especially killer on overheads and piano- transparent, balanced, and reliable.

It’s one of those mics that just quietly gets the job done- session after session.

On this day, July 11th, 1951, Cleveland DJ Alan Freed made history when he launched the Moondog House Rock and Roll Party on WJW radio- the first show to use the phrase “Rock and Roll” in its title.

More than just a catchy name, Freed’s show broke new ground by spotlighting rhythm & blues records that weren’t typically heard on mainstream radio at the time. His bold programming choices helped introduce a fresh, electrifying sound to a much wider audience- paving the way for rock ‘n’ roll to explode into the cultural spotlight.

🎙️ A new name. A new sound. A movement was born.

Gear Talk 🎛️
Today we’re shining a light on the Urei LA-4, a lesser-hyped but seriously underrated optical compressor.

With its solid-state design and program-dependent response, the LA-4 brings smooth, transparent control- perfect for taming dynamic vocals, tightening up bass, or adding just the right amount of polish to acoustic instruments.

We’ve been loving it for subtle compression that feels natural without sounding compressed.

🇺🇸 On this day, July 4th , 1895, the words that would become “America the Beautiful” were first published as a poem in The Congregationalist newspaper.
Katharine Lee Bates was inspired to write the opening lines during a trip to Colorado in 1893, while standing atop Pikes Peak. What began as a poetic reflection on the American landscape- “O beautiful for spacious skies…” -soon resonated across the country.
Set to Samuel A. Ward’s melody “Materna” in the early 1900s, Bates’ verses became the patriotic anthem we know today. The final version was published in 1913, but its legacy began right here- on July 4th.
💫 A song born from awe, travel, and the towering beauty of the Rockies.Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸

🔧🎙 GEAR TALK
Let’s take a second to appreciate the Electro-Voice 664- a microphone built like it was meant to survive a war and record a vocal take right after.

Nicknamed the "Buchanan Hammer" (after EV’s HQ in Buchanan, MI), this mic earned its name not just for its looks, but because you could literally hammer a nail with it and it would still work. With its cast aluminum shell and chrome grille, it’s got the kind of weight that could do damage- onstage or off.

Originally designed for PA and broadcast use in the ’50s & ’60s, the 664 delivers a gritty, mid-forward tone and features a built-in 4-way impedance switch- perfect when you want something raw and character-driven.
