This is not your usual WWII story, but while we were working on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL, we spent a lot of time listening to some of the best blues music going. At the top of our list was Microwave Dave (Gallaher), who left this earth on Friday night. Here's an interview from a year ago.

Today, on Veterans Day, we join with all our nation and our allies to honor the lives, courage, and legacy of our service members. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918, the guns fell silent on the Western Front, as the Armistice that ended World War One took effect, ending over four years of intense warfare.

Always remembering our troops on New Years

“Our group laid in a substantial supply of wine for greeting the New Year. However, a party of fellow crewmen became troubadours, moving from tent to tent, singing festively. At the end of each carol, we provided generous drafts of wine, until most of our wine was gone and the carolers moved on to another tent. Despite the limited wine remaining, we did manage to greet the New Year with an ample supply of popcorn and discovered some potatoes from the kitchen, which were transformed into french fries.”

“On Christmas Eve 1943, we left our tents to attend Midnight Mass at the beautiful Cerignola Cathedral. Earlier, in the autumn, I had been reassigned from the Armored Cavalry to the Army Air Forces as a tail gunner on a B-17 crew. Our Bomb Group relocated from Tunisia to Italy, near Cerignola, where some time ago, a young man from the town had migrated to the USA. He gave thanks for his prosperity in the new world by having the cathedral built in the city of his birth.” J.A.
