For the past 10 years I have made a point of getting up on New Years day and going out on an adventure in the Sierra.
Never last year did I think my next one would be from a new home base in Washington. But I made the same effort and took in a new range and all it had to offer on New Years day 2026.

I missed being with my hiking buddy Tom Trelenberg but remembered the rain slog we did laat year in Lassen Volcanic National Park as I walked around the rain soaked forests here near Mount Baker.

Carson City is having a moment.

Not only is it one of the most accessible winter basecamps in the Sierra — where you can ski Tahoe by day and come back to clear trails and small-town holiday magic at night — it’s also now stamped into PCT lore as the launch point of one of the most unique long-distance campaigns the Sierra saw this year.

Today, Lydia Beck of Visit Carson City returns to Sierra Rec Now to unpack both: https://open.spotify.com/episode/34lK5pJ0BqXXvil36ioZ6Y?si=y0hP1a9DTP2jaEqEyCXS_w
