Today's the day to celebrate "Tommy Boy," starring the late, great Chris Farley, as Tommy Callahan, son of Big Tom, who owned an auto parts factory in Sandusky, Ohio.

🚙 Read the whole story at www.LakeErieLiving.com/tommyboy.

🚙 The is celebrating the movie’s 30th anniversary with Tommy Boy Fest. It kicks off Aug. 7, with a Party on the Pier featuring a guest appearance by Chris Farley’s brother Kevin and runs through Aug. 9. There will be showings of the movie, a car show featuring the Plymouth Belvedere GTX convertible — “It looks like it did at the beginning of the movie,” says Sandusky recreation director Jason Werling — a look-alike contest, a trivia contest, “Tommy Want Wingie Throwdown” wing-eating contest and a “Fat Guy in a Little Race.”

🚙 The movie was a modest success upon its release but has grown to cult status. In fact, it’s one of the things that always gets brought up when Tom Horsman, the city’s communications manager, talks about Sandusky.

🚙 “It’s either Cedar Point or Callahan Auto,” he says. “It’s a movie that a lot of people have a passion for. It’s not an Academy Award winner, but it has a special place in a lot of people’s hearts.”

After being closed for more than a year for a $6.2 million renovation, the Aquatic Visitor Center on Put-in-Bay reopened today at 1 p.m. at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

🐟 The center is housed in a building that opened as a fish hatchery in 1907. It was transformed into a public education center under the Ohio Division of Wildlife in 1992.

🐟 The renovation addressed structural issues, but also added a two-story exhibit showcasing the life cycle of the Lake Erie walleye.

🐟 The center is open through Oct. 1 and admission is free.

🐟 “The facility will … showcase Lake Erie’s great and historically significant fishing for species such as walleyes, smallmouth bass and yellow perch,” says ODNR Division of Wildlife chief Kendra Wecker.

📷 Thanks to Wendy Chambers, executive director of the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau, for providing photos from today's event.

The Hotel Lakeside has anchored Lakeside, Ohio, for 150 years — and historic photos give us a glimpse into how the building, its surroundings and its guests have changed over the years.

❤️ The 150th anniversary celebration includes a rededication ceremony on Saturday and a talk by Lakeside historian George McCormick on Aug. 3.

❤️ Read the full story at www.LakeErieLiving.com/hotellakeside or at the link in our bio.

❤️ The hotel is two years younger than Lakeside Chautauqua, a gated community full of quaint cottages, flower-lined paths, shuffleboard courts, a beach, swimming pool, the historic Hoover Auditorium (Bruce Hornsby takes the stage Saturday night), cute shops, tennis courts, a mini golf course overlooking the water and more.

❤️ The last photo reveals what is described as the hotel's "writing area."

❤️ All photos are courtesy of the Lakeside Heritage Society.

This guy arrives on Put-in-Bay today!

The world's largest yellow rubber duck will be on the island Aug. 1-3 for photo opps and fun. It was invited to the island by the Perry Group, the nonprofit that supports Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial.

🐥 It's a different way of attracting people to the island, explains Perry Group president Marc Burr, who can imagine a dad asking his kid: "You wanna go learn about Perry's victory over the British? Like, no. I don't wanna do that. You wanna go see the world's largest rubber duck? Yeah."

🐥 "Then hopefully, " Burr continues, "mom and dad or grandma and grandpa take the kids down, and they can go through the visitor center, and they can walk up to the to the monument."

🐥 Fun duck fact: The earliest version of the giant yellow duck floated on a large steel barge and required a tractor trailer, forklift and cranes to move and assemble. Now, the duck is positioned on eight big concrete blocks, inflated and tied down.

If you have a Lyman, you know ...

⚓ There's something special about these wooden boats, built specifically for the waves of Lake Erie and surrounding lakes.

⚓ In 1875, brothers Bernard Lyman and Herman Lyman founded the Lyman Brothers Boat Builders and Lyman Boat Works in Cleveland. Now, 150 years later, Lyman love is still going strong.

⚓ There are many Lymans still in use today, some having been passed down through generations and restored. In fact, so beloved are Lyman Boats that finally, new Lymans are again being made — one at a time, by hand, just the way Bernard and Herman intended.
