Ever think what goes into the music you hear while at a restaurant that has entertainment? I mean it's not something most people think of.
There's the booking, the practice, setlist, driving to the show, load in, play 3 hours to mostly people who didn't even know you would be there, don't know who you are, and then the load out, drive home and think back on if you did a good enough job? Made any tips? Remembered to get all your gear, to tip the waitstaff, to grab the free meal that's part of your pay? Then there is the dread that nothing unexpected comes up because you paid the 20 for parking out of your pay and sometimes that's all you bring home after gas and bills for the day.
You budget daily instead of monthly because that's to much to even think of carrying around in your head. So it's 74 dollars a day that you need to earn every day as long as there are no emergency fires you have to put out like dentists or doctors or fret work or tires or... You get it. Then there is the writing that takes inspiration and time and a clear head… and the recording and the socials and websites... But the one lil dude in the audience that asks for an obscure song that reminds you of why you do what you do and who you do it for… yea that makes the going without, the chaos and the struggle all worth every min of the rest.
So next time you see a musician out while you are having a meal or a drink… throw a dollar in. Or ask for a song. They both are the difference in silence and music.

Update: for context. My daughter and I and my family traveled the US and Canada extensively until the pandemic. We have not yet recovered from the devastating aftermath. This is Gatlinburg. Back to where we started it all. EmiSunshine is a beautiful soul and we love what we do. It's not to bash or demean the industry. Just my perception. Love all of you. Thank you for sharing.
