Before Crimson Oak Wood Co. was a thriving custom furnishings business with two Michigan locations and a dedicated team of builders, it was just a man in his garage with a baby monitor in one pocket and a sander in the other.

Jason Norris didn’t set out to become a woodworker. Armed with a master’s degree in architecture, he was deep into a stable career, working for a respected architecture firm throughout Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and Lansing. But the rhythm of a desk job never fit him quite right. “I didn’t really enjoy sitting behind a desk having someone look over my shoulder,” he recalled.
