We followed Alex Johnson from ALR – Advanced Laser Restoration, and I swear… the dude doesn’t just restore wood — he resurrects stories.

We stood inside an old Flandreau entryway where generations walked, argued, laughed, loved… and time had done what time does: faded it.

Most people would see an old staircase.
Alex saw a legacy worth fighting for.

And with every pass, every detail, every grain brought back to life… it hit different.

Then we rode back to Sioux Falls, where Alex broke down something every homeowner and every realtor needs to hear:

We recently sat down with Aspen Thorstenson, CEO of Create design + develop Architects.

We talked about the revitalization of downtown Sioux Falls.

We expected to talk about new construction. Instead, we talked about "good bones."

Aspen pointed out that the magic of isn't the new developments. It’s the friction between the past and the future.

It’s the way modern design wraps around 100-year-old Quartzite and brick.

Too many developers think design is about making things look pretty.

Aspen knows the truth:

Design isn't decoration. Design is an experience.

Next time you’re downtown, stop looking ahead. Look up.

"Being intentional" is the only path forward as we build the future of Sioux Falls.

At least that's the answer you will get if you ask the CEO and Founder of Create design + develop Architects, Aspen Thorstenson.

If you haven't noticed, the rapid expansion of the city post-COVID also meant design that wasn't cohesive. Neighborhoods that suddenly felt like supermarket parking lots.

Business districts that felt isolated and didn't tie into the neighborhoods.

Office Parks were left standing alone at the end of town, uncertain as to their future neighbors.

Intention builds intelligent action.

That's the future, and Create Design and Develop is going to have a big part of making that happen!
