Based on American author Scott Westerfeld’s book trilogy, the steampunk anime series Leviathan offers an alternative history of World War I, where the world is divided by the Central Powers (“Clankers”) who use mechanized walkers and the Triple Entente (“Darwinists”) who genetically fabricate living creatures for use in battle. The 10-part animated series, which debuted on Netflix this summer, was produced by Justin Leach (Star Wars: Visions) and Taiki Sakurai (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) and directed by Christophe Ferreira. The 12-part production was a joint venture between Qubic Pictures and Japan’s Orange studio (Beastars, Trigun Stampede). Series producer and animation veteran Justin Leach, who announced last week that he’s working on an anime adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, answered a few of our questions about this highly original steampunk show:

Spanish director Irene Iborra Rizo’s new stop-motion feature Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Cristal prize at Annecy in June and received great reviews. The film, which is also competing at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in September, offers a powerful portrait of a family dealing with harrowing real-world issues such as poverty, housing insecurity and depression. The titular heroine of the movie protects her little brother from the sad truth of their lives by convincing him that everything they’re experiencing is part of an elaborate film shoot.

Iborra Rizo, who is best known for her previous animated shorts such as Click, and has the distinction of directing Catalonia’s first stop-motion feature, was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about her imaginative and powerful movie:

Kartoon Studios, Inc. today announced the launch of Bitcoin Brigade: Adventures in Satoshi City, a new multiplatform universe anchored by an animated kids' series. The project is the centerpiece of the company's fully-integrated business model spanning content, digital education, merchandise, interactive apps and a Bitcoin treasury strategy.

The animated series, Kartoon Studios' first fully AI anime-style production, is scheduled to debut in fall 2026 on Kartoon Channel.

From September 9-13, the Pixelatl Festival (elfestival.mx) will once again coalesce creative energy from the worlds of animation, video games and comics in Guadalajara, Mexico, welcoming artists, enthusiasts and professionals from across Latin and South America and around the world. Today, the festival organizers revealed the official cineminuto, or signal film/trailer, for the 2025 festival.

This year's signal film is produced by Buenos Aires-based studio Rudo Company, known for its work on music videos like Siamés' viral hit "The Wolf" and currently working on an original co-production with Sacrebleu and Take Five title Esther. Each year, Pixelatl partners with a Latin American studio to showcase the region's creativity and technical prowess. The result is a pastel-tinged 2D piece that explores the intersection of magic and reality in creative expression, evoked by Pixelatl's 2025 theme: Enchant the World.

Ahead of tonight's episode premiere, fans got a sneak peek this morning of the next installment of South Park's headline-grabbing 27th season.

Premiering tonight (Wednesday, August 20) at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central (streaming next day on Paramount+), "Sickofancy" will unfold as one of the show's most surreal character — Towelie, the talking towel — heads off to Washington, D.C.

In the first-look clip, Towelie pulls up to the heavily patrolled capital in a tour bus. "Wow! Washington, D.C.," he soliloquizes, as a National Guard tank rolls by. "This seems like the perfect place for a towel!"

President Trump deployed 800 National Guard troops to the nation's capital on August 11 in a declared "public safety emergency," charging them with taking over the city's police to crack down on violent crime (which, according to Metro PD statistics, was at a 30-year low before the deployment) and homelessness.

During Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2025, Kadokawa, Crunchyroll, Qzil.la and ARCH officially unveiled Sekiro: No Defeat, a new hand-drawn anime that brings the award-winning video game epic Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to life in a new way. The adaptation will be streamed exclusively on Crunchyroll worldwide excluding Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus.

Sekiro: No Defeat is described as an adaptation of the game’s unforgettable story of loyalty and blood, set in a fantastical reimagining of Sengoku-era Japan. Developed by FromSoftware (Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Dark Souls) and published by Activision, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has sold over 10 million copies globally.
