Drive down Montclair Road on Birmingham’s east side and you’ll encounter a neighborhood icon: the roadside marquee at the Levite Jewish Community Center. The sign hosts puns, Judaic references, and pop culture riffs.

While the sign is well-known and appreciated among the community, its authors have remained anonymous, until now.

Community support has always been the backbone of public media, and now it’s everything.

Following the decision by Congress to eliminate funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, WBHM and public media stations across the country enter into an uncharted future.

This is a devastating decision for the millions of people who rely on public media every single day, including those in and around the heart of Alabama.

For WBHM this means a nearly $400,000 budget gap over the next two years. While there is a lot to figure out in the days ahead, the commitment of the WBHM team to serve our community will not change, even if the formula for how we carry out that mission does.

On behalf of the entire team at WBHM and the Gulf States Newsroom, thank you for listening and for your support. More to come soon.

Will Dahlberg
Executive Director & Proud WBHM Member since 2012.

As he faced a trial, then prison time at the Louisiana State Penitentiary for a murder he did not commit, Calvin Duncan started to learn everything he could about the law to fight for his freedom.

Duncan and co-author Sophie Cull tell his story in the new book, "The Jailhouse Lawyer."

The Gulf States Newsroom's Kat Stromquist spoke to them about the book.

While incarcerated at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, Duncan would help hundreds of prisoners file appeals for their cases and motions for improved treatment.
