"To give an overview of popular music from this enchanted land, I’ve created a special playlist of 30 songs by New Mexico artists. Call it a virtual stuffed sopaipilla of sounds that span the early 1950s through recent years. It’s available on YouTube to include some rarities and reach the widest possible audience." —Steve Terrell

Now, he’s striving for better balance, juggling studio work, running his House of Stamps, leading the new Lyndon Foundation, and spending time with his family.

: In March 1967, sisters Bayita and Maria Garoffolo graced the cover of New Mexico Magazine as young flamenco dancers from Albuquerque. The cover description read: “The attractive models for this month’s cover are Bayita Garoffolo, 20, and her sister, Maria, 18, flamenco dancers of Albuquerque. They are the daughters of Mrs. Mercedes Garoffolo, of Placitas. The girls studied in Spain for four years to perfect their dancing technique. The cover photograph is by Harvey Caplin.”

Last weekend, we were lucky enough to meet Maria at the Santa Fe Indian Market while visiting from Spain... nearly six decades later! 💃

New Mexico’s brewing tradition stretches back at least 175 years. In the late 19th century, small breweries sprang up in mining boomtowns and frontier settlements, likely creating a demand for homegrown hops. But Prohibition brought that momentum to a halt, shuttering breweries and cutting off potential markets for local hop farmers.

Nearly a century later, New Mexico ranks 10th in the nation for breweries per capita. Still, until recently, the industry’s hops have come almost exclusively from out of state. And, currently, the state has only six to eight acres in commercial hops production. But Cory Murchy, assistant director of operations at El Rancho de las Golondrinas, sees a bright future for local hops.

A Santa Fe farm is putting New Mexico-grown hops on tap. Meet the growers, the brewers, and try two recipes!

The rambling 86-room El Rey Court opened in 1936, but its current era began in 2016, when hoteliers Jeff Burns and Matt Comfort took over and gave it a hip makeover. El Rey reopened in 2018 with a Southwest-goes-mod aesthetic, an Instagram-worthy swimming pool, and La Reina, a bar focusing on mezcal and tequila. While stylish patrons include an influx of influencers and visiting creatives, the hotel has become just as much a community hub for locals—largely because of its free live music, hosted regularly in the lobby and adjoining La Reina bar area. 🔗 https://zurl.co/OjmFH

Step inside Santa Fe's El Rey Court for free shows, intimate sets, and big-name acts that keep the music scene sizzling.

”A booming mining community in the 1920s, Madrid became a ghost town when its commercial coal-mining operation mostly dried up after World War II. It lay nearly deserted for decades before attracting a few ambitious artists, hippies, and others seeking an alternative lifestyle in the 1970s. Since then, jewelry makers, gallerists, herbalists, filmmakers, painters, potters, poets, musicians, and spiritual mediums have flocked to this tiny unincorporated East Mountain village that still retains much of its Old West charm.” —Julian Dossett

Remade into an artists’ haven, the historic mining town of Madrid is getting a fresh boost of energy with a new wave of makers, musicians, and ideas.
