One small girl of eight years old who was thousands and thousands miles away from us had an evening prayer with her mom. She learnt from her mom that many children in Orissa lost their parents. Then her mom asked her, if she would like to give something from her personal savings for these poor children. The girl ran to her room and brought her personal money-box and gave away everything she was saving for the eight years of her life! Her mom got completely amazed at her daughter’s decision. She took this offering and brought it to my puzzled parents, and they sent it to us to India.

The world was shocked by the persecutions in Orissa, one of the states in India. Christians living in this state faced severest persecutions from religious fanatics. “Well, that is it. Lana ate a cockroach! ”- declared my husband. Yes, I ate a large cockroach, which our students bought on the market and brought to us. But at first the Burmese deep fried a cockroach, and only after that, they offered this delicious dish to us. No, they were not making fun! The Burmese people are similar to Chinese regarding what they eat. They love rice, and they eat everything that flies, jumps and crawls.

Suddenly the bus slammed on the brakes and woke up a dozing Paritosh. Because of the unexpected jolt he dropped his Bible down to the bus aisle. Being only half-awake, he did not realize that what was about to happen would be so scary and terrible that it would divide the lives of all the passengers on board into “before and after the trip”. Instantly some armed with sticks, axes and hoes flooded the bus, overflowing the souls of every traveler with penetrating horror and boundless despair. Paritosh felt his heart pounding with uncontrollable speed, filling his soul with a chilling premonition of something irrevocably traumatic and evil.

As much as Lakshmi could remember, she was always blamed that she was a useless girl. Who would want to marry her, if her parents were not able to collect a traditional dowry for her? Indeed, according to Indian tradition, her two older sisters must marry first, paying a rich dowry to the families of future husbands. After that it is unlikely that her parents could find enough money to marry her also! So Lakshmi’s childhood was poisoned by absurd reproaches from her parents and by constant talk of how things would be different if she was born a boy!
