This week, our explored the ethereal nature of everyday objects through these two stunning artworks.

"Page Turner" by Lori Mehta celebrates the sensory experience of holding a physical book. Mehta says she tried to "capture those subtle details: the warm glow light reflected on the pages, the rustle as a page is turned, and the comfort of a book in hand." Meanwhile, Mary Kocol's piece is a photo of a flower that was frozen in an ice plate and photographed in sunlight. In Kocol's words, “Blooms and ice are temporary. The photograph becomes the permanent art object – the record that they once briefly existed."

These pieces are displayed as part of "Community Canvas," an initiative presented by GBH News' The Culture Show to display artwork by community members on our digital mural.

"We hope that all of our MASTERPIECE dramas are entertaining with great stories and characters. But we also want our programs to mean something to our audience. For me, drama is about emotional truths — the purpose of life, how to love and be loved, how to deal with loss. Our best stories deal with these larger themes by showing how the characters deal with life’s challenges. Our mission is always to bring that kind of programming to our audience."

We've had the pleasure of showing off these two colorful and abstract pieces on our this week 🖼️

"Exuberance" by Julia Purdy captures the view of the Boston skyline from I-93 North. The piece "describes the feeling in my heart as it fills with excitement and joy when returning to Boston, my home,” Purdy says. Meanwhile, "Jar of Beau" by Beau McCall is an Afrofuturist image featuring McCall himself donning an elaborate button headdress and glasses. The jar of buttons references how he began his creative practice with this humble item that is found in many households and serves as keepsakes, family heirlooms, and sources of inspiration.

These pieces are displayed as part of "Community Canvas," an initiative presented by GBH News' The Culture Show to display artwork by community members on our digital mural.

On this day 56 years ago, Judy Griffin took a risk by hitchhiking to Woodstock after her car broke down on the way there. She poked her head into the window of a nearby 1967 VW Beetle and asked for a ride –– which she'd spend sitting next to her future husband. She and Jerry Griffin would fall for each other over the course of the three-day spectacle of music, peace, and love (focusing especially on the latter). This year will mark their 50th year of marriage, although they prefer to celebrate their meeting at Woodstock as their anniversary date.

Without any pictures from the day, the two remembered the story only in memory and recounted tales. That is, until a friend spotted the couple in the trailer for the documentary "Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation" from GBH's American Experience | PBS. Here is that moment captured from the festival, alongside the couple's recreation of it five decades later ❤️

On this day 21 years ago, Julia Child passed away. Today, we remember her for teaching us about so much more than cooking –– she showed us how to have the courage to try something new, embrace failure, and turn mistakes into something creative. RIP JC. 🕊️

Congrats to Callie Crossley for being inducted into the (NABJ) National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame! We are celebrating this incredible honor on today's 🎉

Anyone who has heard Crossley on Under the Radar with Callie Crossley, NPR Morning Edition, Boston Public Radio, or The Culture Show knows that she is a journalistic talent to be admired. These shows are just a few highlights in her impressive career, which includes being a producer for ABC News 20/20 and the "Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years" documentary series, for which she earned an Oscar nomination. Her work reflects her incredible storytelling instinct, insightful commentary, and commitment to uplifting underrepresented voices.

This recognition honors "legendary Black journalists and communicators who have made outstanding contributions to the news and media industries" — and Crossley has certainly earned her spot among them. We are so excited to see her recognized.

If you took a drive down the Mass Pike this week, we hope you took some time to stop and smell the flowers... the ones on our , that is 🪷

This week we displayed two pieces by local artists that both capture the natural beauty of flowers. Susie Margolin's floral arrangement uses locally-grown blooms and foraged elements to create a "floral sculpture." The piece invites the viewer to slow down and embrace transformation, finding beauty in everyday objects and nature’s life cycle. Meanwhile, "Lilypads" by Cambrasine (Jennifer Bouché), is an illustration based on a pond in Littleton, MA. “It is a colorful yet tranquil scene that I hope can bring a moment of peace to the busy cityscape,” Cambrasine says.

These pieces are displayed as part of "Community Canvas," an initiative presented by GBH News' The Culture Show to display artwork from local artists on our digital mural.
