The Annual Girls Empowerment Conference 2025 kicked off today at the Albertson Hotel, Kenema, bringing together young girls, mentors, educators, and community leaders for two days of inspiration and learning.

Held under the patronage of Paramount Chief Sadiq Kapuwa, the event features Saptieu Elizabeth Saccoh Esq., Deputy Minister of Justice, as Guest of Honour, and Naasu Fofanah as Keynote Speaker.

The conference, organized by Radiance SL Media/Project, focuses on empowering girls through mentorship, debate, public speaking, and sports—with discussions centered on SGBV and teenage pregnancy prevention.

Abigail Suwu-Kaindo, Founder of the Girls Empowerment Conference, said the initiative aims to create safe spaces for girls to grow and lead.
“Our goal is to help girls see themselves as powerful agents of change,” she said. “Every session is about confidence, courage, and leadership.”

Schools participating include Ahmadiyya Primary, Kankalay Primary, UMC Primary, Benson Suwu Memorial, Methodist Secondary School, and Community Initiative Academy.

The event will climax with the Radiance Girls Football Match between Kahunla Queens and Newsman FC at the Kenema Town Field on October 11.

Finance Ministry and World Bank Sign Contracts for Kenema and Makeni Market Modernization

The Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the World Bank, has today signed landmark contract agreements for the implementation of the Resilient Urban Sierra Leone Project (RUSLP) — a transformative initiative aimed at upgrading and modernizing central markets in Makeni and Kenema.

Under the project, the Kenema Central Market contract has been awarded to Ambitious Construction Company at a value of US$5,000,000, while the Makeni Central Market contract has been awarded to Micheletti & Company Limited, in joint venture with S&H Trading Investment SL Limited, at a total cost of US$4,180,000.

The RUSLP is designed to strengthen urban resilience, improve infrastructure, and enhance the livelihoods of market women and local communities through better market facilities and safer trading environments.

Speaking exclusively to Hands of Hope Online TV, the Mayor of Kenema City, His Lordship Thomas Karimu Baio expressed deep gratitude for what he described as a “timely and life-changing intervention” for the people of Kenema.

“This project comes at a time when the people of Kenema need a new market the most,” Mayor Baio said. “The current market facility can no longer contain the growing number of traders, especially women who rely on trading to feed their families.”
The Mayor lamented the challenges faced by market women, who for years have operated under harsh and unsafe conditions due to limited space and poor infrastructure.
“It pains me deeply to see our women struggling under the rain and scorching sun just to earn their daily bread,” he stated. “Because of the lack of proper shelter, many traders are forced to scatter across the city, making it difficult to maintain order and cleanliness.”
Mayor Baio also highlighted the broader implications of the project for community safety and economic growth.
“The absence of a well-structured market is not just an inconvenience — it is a security risk,” he emphasized. “Our women often suffer losses and theft because they trade in open and unprotected spaces. This new market will restore dignity, safety, and opportunity to our traders.”
The Mayor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the RUSLP and ensuring that the project delivers lasting benefits to the people of Kenema.
“We are grateful to the Ministry of Finance and the World Bank for their partnership and vision,” he added. “This marks a new chapter in the development story of Kenema.”
The signing of these contracts marks a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s broader effort to promote inclusive urban development and strengthen the country’s economic resilience through modern infrastructure investments.
