Somewhere along the way, many women were taught that aging meant hiding.

Hiding fine lines. Hiding changes in skin texture. Hiding the very features that tell the story of a life well lived.

This week on Chatting With The Experts, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jenifer Hester, makeup artist and licensed esthetician, about a refreshing alternative:

What if makeup wasn't about looking younger? What if it was about looking like the best version of yourself right now?

From the very beginning, Jenifer challenged many of the outdated "anti-aging" rules that women have heard for years.

Instead of covering up, she encourages women to enhance.

Instead of fighting age, she encourages women to celebrate their natural beauty with techniques that work with mature skin rather than against it.

It Starts Before the Makeup
One of the biggest misconceptions about makeup is that the magic happens in the products.

According to Jenifer, it starts much earlier.

Healthy, hydrated skin is the foundation of beautiful makeup.

As both a makeup artist and esthetician, she emphasized that skin preparation matters just as much as the makeup itself.

Hydration is not just about drinking water.

It is also about what we eat.

Leafy greens. Cucumbers. Melons. Fresh fruits.

Foods that help hydrate the body from the inside out.

She also highlighted the importance of omega fatty acids found in foods like fish, walnuts, and avocado, which help support healthy, nourished skin.

Good makeup begins with good skin care.

Less Coverage, More Confidence
One of the most valuable lessons from our conversation was the reminder that more makeup does not always create a better result.

In fact, mature skin often benefits from less.

Jenifer recommends lighter, more flexible products such as skin tints, BB creams, CC creams, and tinted serums instead of heavy matte foundations.

Why?

Because thick foundation can settle into fine lines and create the very look many women are trying to avoid.

The goal is not to mask the skin. The goal is to let it breathe.

This shift alone can create a fresher, more natural appearance.

The Power of Strategic Placement
Another highlight of our discussion focused on placement.

Not more product.

Better placement.

From blush and bronzer to eyeshadow and concealer, small adjustments can make a remarkable difference.

For mature eyes, Jenifer recommends softer matte shadows instead of heavy frosty shimmers, especially on hooded or crepey eyelids.

She also shared techniques for lifting facial features naturally through the placement of blush and contouring products.

The goal is subtle enhancement.

Not transformation.

Glow Over Powder
One of Jenifer’s strongest recommendations was simple:

Less powder. More glow.

Many women unintentionally create a dry, flat appearance by overusing powder and mattifying products.

Instead, she recommends dewy setting sprays that help maintain a fresh, healthy finish.

The result is skin that looks radiant rather than overly perfected.

And perhaps that is the bigger lesson.

Beauty is not about perfection.

It is about vitality.

A Different Way to Think About Beauty
What I appreciated most about this conversation was its message of empowerment.

There was no pressure to reverse aging.

No promise of looking twenty years younger.

Just practical advice for enhancing natural beauty with confidence.

Because growing older is not something to hide.

It is something to honor.

And when makeup is approached as a tool for self-expression rather than correction, it becomes far more enjoyable.

Food should nourish you.
Not overwhelm you.

For many people, healthy eating has become associated with pressure, perfection, and complicated rules. Expensive ingredients. Strict meal plans. Endless advice about what to avoid.

This week on Chatting With The Experts, I had a refreshing conversation with Demetria Cox Thomas, plant based registered dietitian nutritionist and CEO of Dee Veggie Nutrition, whose approach to nutrition feels realistic, practical, and deeply human.

Her philosophy is simple:

Healthy eating should feel accessible. Flexible. Enjoyable. Not stressful.

One of the most refreshing parts of our conversation was that there was no shame attached to food. No guilt. No pressure to eat perfectly.

Just practical guidance for real life.

Through her nutrition counseling and cultural cooking classes featuring Ethiopian, Jamaican Ital, and Indian inspired dishes, Demetria helps people reconnect with food in a way that feels sustainable and culturally familiar.

And that matters.

Because healthy eating should not require people to disconnect from their culture, traditions, or favorite flavors in order to feel “healthy.”

Nutrition does not have to feel restrictive to be effective.

One of the most important parts of our conversation focused on food deserts and food access.

Not everyone has easy access to fresh produce or specialty health foods. Demetria spoke honestly about the importance of meeting people where they are instead of creating guilt around what they cannot afford or access.

Frozen vegetables.
Canned vegetables.
Simple pantry staples.

Healthy eating is still possible.

Another standout part of the episode was her approach to flavor.

Demetria shared how spices like smoked paprika, cumin, curry blends, berbere, herbs, citrus, and coconut milk can completely transform vegetables and plant based meals.

Because vegetables are not boring.
They are often simply under seasoned.

She also explained how simple cooking techniques can dramatically improve texture and confidence in the kitchen. Roasting vegetables enhances sweetness. Removing excess water from mushrooms and tofu improves texture and flavor.

Small changes. Big difference.

What stayed with me most was this:

Sometimes people are not avoiding healthy eating because they do not care.
They simply do not feel confident preparing the food.

And confidence changes everything.

This episode reminds us that wellness does not always begin with dramatic change. Sometimes it begins with one practical adjustment. One new spice. One healthier habit. One meal prepared differently.

Nutrition should support your life, not complicate it.

It should feel realistic.
Sustainable.
And rooted in enjoyment, not fear.

Skincare is often treated as cosmetic.

Something optional. Something indulgent. Something reserved for special occasions.

But in a recent episode of Chatting With The Experts, my conversation with Jenifer Hester, licensed esthetician and oncology esthetician, revealed something much deeper:

Skincare is also care. Preventative care. Restorative care. And for some people, deeply emotional care.

With over six years of experience and certifications in chemical peels, acne care, oncology skincare, and holistic nutrition health, Jenifer approaches skincare from both a scientific and compassionate perspective.

What stood out immediately was her clarity around the role of estheticians.

Many people misunderstand what estheticians actually do. Jenifer explained that estheticians are trained, state licensed skincare professionals with hundreds of hours of education in skin analysis, non invasive treatments, and product guidance. Their role is not to diagnose disease, but to support skin health, identify concerns early, and refer clients to dermatologists when medical intervention is needed.

That distinction matters.

The Truth About Chemical Peels
One of the most insightful parts of our conversation centered around chemical peels.

The term alone can sound intimidating, especially online where trends often move faster than education.

Jenifer described chemical peels as controlled exfoliation processes that help stimulate collagen production, improve acne, refine pores, and restore glow. But she also cautioned against attempting strong peels at home without professional guidance.

Skincare is not just about results. It is about safety.

And in an era where social media often replaces expertise, that reminder feels increasingly important.

Oncology Skincare and the Power of Gentle Care
Perhaps the most moving part of the conversation was Jenifer’s work in oncology skincare.

Many people undergoing chemotherapy or radiation experience major changes in their skin. Increased sensitivity, dryness, inflammation, and irritation can become daily realities during treatment.

Jenifer explained how specialized oncology skincare helps adapt treatments safely before, during, and after cancer care.

But beyond technique, there is something deeply human about this work.

It is about helping people feel cared for during one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.

It is about preserving dignity, comfort, and confidence when so much feels uncertain.

That kind of care cannot be measured only in products or procedures.

Skincare as Preventative Wellness
Another powerful theme throughout the episode was prevention.

Jenifer encourages people to stop viewing skincare as a luxury and start seeing it as part of overall wellness. Regular skin evaluations can help identify concerns early while supporting healthy skin function over time.

She recommends appointments every four to six weeks to align with the skin’s natural cell turnover cycle.

Not because perfection is the goal. But because maintenance matters.

A Bigger Reflection
This conversation invites a broader question:

What if skincare is not about vanity at all? What if it is about attention? Awareness? Care?

Jenifer’s work reminds us that confidence is often restored in quiet ways. Through consistency. Through education. Through helping someone feel comfortable in their own skin again.

And sometimes, healing begins there.
