Southside Sentinel

Southside Sentinel The Southside Sentinel has been serving Middlesex County and the adjacent region since April 9, 1896; SSentinel.com since 1997.

Published in 1996 during the Sentinel’s centennial celebration:

Written by Fred Gaskins, Publisher of Rappahannock Press, Inc. "In the future… will there still be a paper to curl up with in your favorite easy chair? Past futurists predicted the end of newspapers when radios invaded every household, and again when television saturated the airways. Particularly in rural areas like ours, we predict

the traditional newspaper will be around many more years, along with electronic versions you can read on your “wrist receiver.”

That’s one prediction. In reality, your guess is as good as ours, but the Sentinel will continue to deliver the local news as conveniently as possible. Of course, we’re assuming everyone will still know how to read in 2096."

Route 3 travelers can expect overnight delays crossing the Robert O. Norris Bridge between Middlesex and Lancaster counties this week with one-way, alternating traffic for a maintenance project.

Starting Thursday, July 24, through Saturday, July 26, a portion of the Route 3 bridge over the Rappahannock River between Grey’s Point and White Stone will be reduced to a single travel lane between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., and on Friday night through Saturday morning between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m.
Automated flagging devices will direct traffic through the work zone. Flagging crew members operate the devices, which can be adjusted to respond to congestion or incidents on the bridge.

The nearly two-mile bridge remains safe for travelers with its current 45-ton weight limit posting, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) news release. Weather permitting, all structural steel repairs are expected to be complete by September 2026.

A fiery, three-vehicle crash Sunday evening on Norris Bridge near Grey’s Point has claimed two lives. Speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, according to authorities. Charred, battered vehicles completely blocked the bridge for a time; the bridge was not fully re-opened until mid-morning Monday, after safety inspections were performed.
