Today marks the 35th anniversary of Stevie Ray Vaughan's passing in a helicopter crash back in 1990. Stevie was just 35 years old and was out on tour with Eric Clapton. It will always be one of my cherished memories working on the radio, when I interviewed Stevie before a Stanley Theater concert in January of 1986. He talked about his new album Soul to Soul, touring with his brother Jimmy (Fabulous Thunderbirds) and he even played a Fender Strat guitar for us on the air, signed it and then we gave it away to a listener. RIP Stevie Ray. (Also pictured on the left, Coach Bill Houser, our sports guy on The Hot Pajama Club.)

Whatya know, it's National Radio Day- a day to celebrate the history of radio stations and the fun we've had listening (and working) over the years. Did you know: The big three inventors included: Heinrich Hertz (Germany), Gugliemo Marconi (Italy) and Nikola Tesla (Croatia)- yes, the inspiration for the band Tesla. There are over 15,000 licensed radio stations in the US today. While radio technology goes back to the late 1880's, I found an archive photo from back in 1978, when radio was everywhere, but color photos were not. 😆

If you remember this guy, then you remember cranking tunes in the afternoon, rockin' with the Doc, Jerry Kraus and he's going to be back on The DRIVE this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons from 3p-8p, filling in for Genesee Joe. You know he'll have some local memories, rock history notes, those cool deep cuts from his medicine bag and the return of The Friday Time Warp. The Doc will be rockin' the docks, ruling the pools and shakin' the lakes, for sure.

I just heard the mighty Matt McMullen on 92.7FM, The DRIVE remind everyone that Ozzy was rocking the Utica Aud on this date back in 1981. Ah yes, I remember it well. (A mere 44 years ago.) Were you there? I had the pleasure of interviewing him before the concert and he was a funny guy and quite friendly with our staff. RIP Ozzy.
