Lobos open district play with a win

The Uvalde Lobos made their District 27-4A basketball debut with a victory Friday afternoon at Pearsall.
Down 18-17 at halftime, they outscored the Pearsall Lady Mavericks, 17-12, in the second half to post a 34-30 victory.
Amilee Pulido, who scored 8 points in the fourth period, finished the game with a total of 21 points.
Natalia Cabralez contributed 9 points, while Kaylea Garcia tallied 4 points.
Bailey Morales scored 8 points to lead Pearsall’s scoring.
With the win, Coach Michael Garza’s Lobos now have a season record of 10-10.
Next action for the Lobos is scheduled for Dec. 30 when they make their district home debut against the Floresville Jaguars.

Coyotes whip the Cotulla Cowboys

The Uvalde Coyotes ended the home part of their 2025 basketball schedule with a big win in Harvey Kinchlow Gym Friday night.
Up by 6 points with just under two minutes left in the third period, the Coyotes outscored the Cotulla Cowboys, 23-12, the rest of the way to post a 79-60 victory.
They began the final period with a 9-0 scoring run to open a 70-53 advantage.
Jonathan Martinez hit on three consecutive field goals, before Jett Flores topped off the run with a 3-point field goal.
Cotulla rallied to cut the deficit to 75-60.
But Jonathan Fudge scored on a pair of short-range shots late in the game to top off Uvalde’s scoring.
The Coyotes got off to a 17-5 lead five minutes into the game, but Cotulla battled back to cut the Uvalde lead to 18-17 by the end of the period.
The Cowboys took the lead, 22–18, early in the second period.
Uvalde rallied to knot the score at 27-27.
They closed out the first half with a 7-0 run, topped off by Jordan “Porkchop” Albarado’s 3-point field goal at the buzzer.
They held on to the scoring lead in the third period, before blowing the game open in the fourth period.
Porkchop Albarado led all individual scoring the game. He racked up 28 points for the Coyotes.
Two other players scored in double figures for Uvalde, including Carlos Sierra with 11 points and Jonathan Martinez with 10 points.
Javi Gonzales and Jonathan Fudge each scored 7 points, Michael Arreola with 6 points, and David Falcon III and Jett Flores each scored 5 points.
Jamarcus Ramirez scored 23 points to top Cotulla’s individual scoring.
With the win, Coach Ramon Buruato’s Coyotes upped their season record to 10-8.
They will play the Holy Cross Knights at San Antonio on Dec. 22.
The Coyotes will play the Marble Falls Mustangs on Dec. 29 in the San Antonio’s Frost Bank Center.
On Jan. 6, the Coyotes will begin District 27-4A competition on the road against the Carrizo Springs Wildcats.
Next home action for the Coyotes will be on Jan. 9 when they make their district home debut against the Pleasanton Eagles.
In junior varsity action Friday, the Coyotes recorded a 52-22 victory.
Up 29-22, Coach Will Kolinek’s Coyotes closed out the game with a 23-0 scoring run.
Trae Garcia and Dakari Ortiz led the young Coyotes in scoring with 16 points and 11 pointed, respectively.
Jeremiah Alvarez and Juan Alvarez each scored 5 points, Noel Ramon and Alejandro Cruz each scored 4 points, Adam Ortiz and Caleb Trevino each scored 3 points, and Diego Romero with 1 point.

In 1970, Genoveva Morales filed a class-action lawsuit against UCISD over unequal education for Mexican American students, and in 1975 a federal appeals court ruled the school district had violated civil rights laws. In 2014, UCISD — then led by its first Hispanic female superintendent, Jeanette Ball — renamed Uvalde Junior High as Morales Junior High in her honor. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Dec. 19 at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Dec. 20 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Local organizer Rose Cooper invites all birders, beginner and advanced, to participate Dec. 20 in Uvalde’s 33rd-annual Christmas Bird Count. Last year, local participants spotted 124 species of birds in the 15-mile diameter bird-spotting circle. They included several unusual species, like the green-tailed towhee, clay-colored thrush, Western bluebird, and Anna’s hummingbird. To join, show up at the Willie De Leon Civic Center parking lot by 7:30 a.m.

The 14,475 pages of emails, which Uvalde Leader-News staff are still reviewing, include violent doodles and notes in files titled “S R file” and “documents for Pete.” The PDFs, which a junior high secretary sent to then-police chief Pete Arredondo two days after the Robb tragedy, include information on Ramos as well as references to a shooting and bombing that two Morales Junior High students planned in 2018 for April of their senior year, which would have been 2022.
