Howdy folks, Brad here.
I want to take a minute to speak directly to the All Oldies 24/7 listener base and explain where things stand, why changes are being made, and what we are trying to accomplish.
I’ll start by saying this: I do not enjoy having to come on here and post things like this. I am traditionally pretty hands-off when it comes to social media and prefer to let our staff handle the day-to-day presence of the station. But because there seems to be some concern and confusion about the direction of All Oldies 24/7, I feel it is important to address it directly.
Some people seem to believe that the changes being made are about erasing what All Oldies 24/7 has been, or disrespecting the legacy of the station. This has been made clear by messages we've received and comments posted talking about how "we are destroying the legacy of this station".
That is not the case.
If our goal was to turn All Oldies 24/7 into something completely different, we would not have waited four years to start making changes. We would have done that right away.
When Ventra Radio acquired All Oldies 24/7 in July of 2022, we already had two oldies stations in our own portfolio one in Syracuse, New York and another in Watertown, New York. Instead of keeping all three of them separate, or trying to compete with what All Oldies 24/7 had already built, both of those stations were absorbed into All Oldies 24/7 and which then had AllOldies 24/7 become HD subchannel of their parent stations. That decision was made because we respected the strength of All Oldies 24/7, its audience, and what had already been built.
From day one, we took on a station that already had a loyal following, an established identity, and real operating expenses. Since then, we have worked to keep the station running, keep the music going, and keep the spirit of All Oldies 24/7 intact.
But there is also a practical side to this that needs to be understood.
All Oldies 24/7 is a radio station, but it is also a business operation. It has licensing costs, streaming costs, hosting costs, software costs, broadcast delivery costs, website costs, automation costs, technical maintenance costs, and additional expenses tied to being carried as an HD Radio subchannel in multiple markets.
For the past four and a half years being that All Oldies 24/7 is a commercial free radio station, those expenses have largely been carried by Ventra Radio, profits from our other media properties, and in many cases, directly out of my own pocket when there was a need.
We have never asked the listener base to contribute or donate, nor have we had any plans to do so. We have not put the station behind a paywall. We have not loaded it down with long commercial breaks. We have not turned it into something that feels nothing like All Oldies 24/7.
Internally, we have had conversations more than once about whether the station should become fully commercialized with regular ad breaks, live jocks, paid promotional spots, or other revenue-focused changes. Each time, our staff has decided against that because we want to preserve what people actually enjoy about the station.
But that also means there has to be some give and take.
We are always open to feedback. We listen to concerns. We understand that not every listener is going to love every change, and that is fair.
What is not realistic is expecting the station to reject every update, avoid every change, refuse every attempt to modernize, and still expect Ventra Radio to keep carrying the full cost of the station every month.
Unless listeners want All Oldies 24/7 to start accepting donations, charging for access, or filling the station with commercial breaks, there has to be room for the people actually paying the bills to make responsible decisions about the station we are fiscally responsible for.
All Oldies 24/7 has to become more sustainable. That does not mean changing what people love about it. The music, the memories, and the identity of the station still matter. But the way the station is managed, presented, supported, and operated has to improve.
Right now, All Oldies 24/7 depends too heavily on resources from the rest of Ventra Radio. That cannot continue forever without affecting the other stations and media properties that also have bills, responsibilities, and futures to protect.
If we are not allowed room to make the changes needed to fix that, then eventually the responsible decision would be to close All Oldies 24/7 before it puts too much strain on everything else.
That is not what we want. That is what we are actively trying to avoid by changing what we're changing. These changes are not being made to take All Oldies 24/7 away from the people who love it. They are being made so the station has a real path forward.
If you would like to discuss this further, you are welcome to send this page a direct message. My staff will be happy to connect you with me directly so we can have that conversation.
