The New Territory

The New Territory Autobiography of the Lower Midwest. Steadfast love for the Lower Midwest. In print twice a year. Occasional digital collaborations.

In 2016, editors from the Ozarks and lower Great Plains independently launched The New Territory as a magazine for literary journalism and art focused on a region known around the world as โ€œflyover country.โ€ Its articles are long. Its photography and illustrations say, โ€œLinger!โ€ Its ecological/cultural topics are nuanced and eclectic, fitting together in ways that defy easy explanation. Read these

stories, and we will change your idea of the Lower Midwest. Our writers will show you what the region is and what it can be. They will share in the pain of life severed from land and community. They will share their paths back to presence and joy. You will encounter people like you who are creative, caring and attentive. You will strengthen your sense of place. For six years The New Territory has kept that promise, and its readers have kept the endeavor alive through their subscriptions, donations and sponsorships.
