UPDATE: A two-vehicle, no contact crash that occurred just west of the I-94 292 exit to Valley City resulted in the injury of one of the drivers and the release of more than two million bees being transported by 18-wheeler.
According to a new release from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the driver of the 18 wheeler, a 55 year old male from Hialeah, Florida,
took evasive action to avoid a collision with a second vehicle that was also traveling westbound. After the 18 wheeler driver swerved left, the semi’s driver-side tires entered the median before the driver attempted to steer back onto the roadway. The semi then rolled onto its passenger side.
The driver exited the vehicle under his own power but was immediately attacked by hundreds of bees after escaping the cab. He ran to the nearby Sheyenne River to remove the bees and was later transported by Barnes County Ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Fargo for the treatment of hundreds of bee stings.
The 15 year old male driver of the second vehicle, a pick up truck, did not sustain injuries. Charges for the teenage driver remain under investigation.
Following the accident, the Valley City Police Department, via a social media post, asked all those in the area with bee allergies to shelter in place.
Several local beekeepers responded to the scene to assist with the containment and recovery of the bees, which were being transported in 600 to 800 hives. Recovery operations lasted several hours before the semi and trailer could be removed from the roadway. A lane closure related to the crash and recovery operations remained in place for about eight hours.
As of Friday morning, the crash remains under investigation.
Agencies involved in working the scene were: North Dakota State Patrol, Barnes County Sheriff’s Office, Valley City Police Department, Valley City Fire Department, Barnes County Ambulance, North Dakota Department of Emergency Services, Barnes County Emergency Management, North Dakota Department of Agriculture, Valley City Public Works, North Dakota Department of Transportation
