Recently, the Academy of Motion Pictures’ 7,000 member voting body decided to add a new category to next year’s upcoming Oscars telecast: Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film. When you say it like that, it almost sounds impressive. Then the sudden realization of what it actually means sinks in. This isn’t an honorable decision by the Academy. Let’s not kid ourselves, politics is messy, dirty, dark, ugly, uncomfortable, ugly and depressing, but we still need to talk about it. We’ve allowed ourselves to believe that politics don’t affect us. “They work up there, we work down here. Most of the things they’re dealing with don’t even concern us. One of the biggest problems in America right now is inequality. It’s unequal on practically every level from race, to class and even to gender. Women get paid less than men, and very few of them ever excel into higher positions. That is something that’s going to take time to change, but I know of one particular place we can start: Sports.
