Our studio is home to a true vintage API console, consisting of a 32 Channel section circa 1977, with the original mega-headroom 312 mic pres and 554 semi-parametric EQ's, and an original 16 Channel section, circa 1972, the sound that launched the API reputation, equipped with beloved 550 EQ's. A better drum sound can not be had, and the design of the studio, with the three iso rooms in addition t

o the main space, is ideal for tracking a band live. Put all that together with great mics and the many years of experience of the staff, and you have a combination that ensures a positive recording experience, as close to a sure thing as you will find.

Throwback to............likely 1997 or '98. This is me and one of my main mentors, the wonderful Gavin MacKillop, and we we most likely working on the "Friends" tv show theme song with The Rembrandts, which is when I met him, ironically at Stagg St! We'd go on to work nonstop together for another 8 years after that.

This tech Tuesday we’re celebrating our pair of Teletronix LA3As! Released in 1969 as a successor to the legendary LA2A. While utilizing solid state instead of tub technology, these beauties were still equipped the T4B optical attenuator which sculpted the legendary LA2A optical compression sound. The LA3A sounds amazing on a wide variety of instruments, and is a consistent favorite for bass guitar. Come try them out!

Throwback to..........2021, with one of our patron saints, Vinnie Colaiuti, who besides being the GOAT and always blowing our minds with his playing and musical IQ, has always been strong supporter of Stagg and fan of recording his drums here. He's directed so many projects he's been involved with out way, and we truly appreciate him!

Throwback Thursday to late 2022 when Daron Malakian's brought in two sick custom Gibson's to record his Scars on Broadway record, with Ryan Williams at the helm. (I got my mug in there too!) It's a killer record and just dropped in July. Super fun project to be involved in.

Happy tech tuesday! Today we’re celebrating one of our legendary Teletronix LA-2A leveling amplifiers/limiters. I’m sure you’re all familiar the wonderful plugin, but for those who haven’t had the hands on opportunity, here’s the analog version! This is hands down one of the best and most musical compressor/limiters ever built. It was originally released in 1962. Jim Lawrence, the creator of these legendary units, original started designing the T4 optical sensors that would define this compressors sound for a Cold War era jet propulsion project. For those who don’t know, an optical compressor utilizes a light panel and variable photoresistor to actually use light as a mechanism to activate compression based on how bright the light is. This gives the LA2A a unique and variable compression ratio depending on the level and frequency of the source material. While it was born out of Jim Lawrence’s frustration with having to ride fader gain during broadcasts, it ended up being one of the most legendary and musical pieces of outboard gear ever built! Featured in this video is our LA-2A with the aftermarket T4B attenuator from Kenetek Pro Audio featuring a faster release than the original unit, and making it even better for certain applications. It’s a popular one for acoustic guitar! 🦌❤️
