Master Joe Lee makes it look easy. Being his demonstration partner tells a different story.

I spent time on the mat with Master Joe Lee to experience his approach to martial arts firsthand. From fast Kenpo hands to taking my balance and putting me on the ground, he gives me plenty to react to and plenty to learn.

If you train karate, Kenpo, jiu-jitsu, or just enjoy watching old-school martial artists explain their craft, this one is for you. There’s personality behind every demonstration, and I get a front-row seat to all of it.

What’s one lesson from an older martial artist that changed the way you train?

Can your wrestling stop someone from drawing a knife?

Jarrad Arbuckle put us to the test at The Hive in San Jacinto, using wrestling, pummeling, and hand control in a knife-access drill. The challenge: get to your own training knife while preventing your partner from accessing theirs.

Simple rules. A whole lot harder when the other person is resisting.

Want to train with Jarrad? Comment “LEARN” and I’ll DM you the address to The Hive, plus a 7-day free trial to his online training at FightElevator.com.

In-person knife training: Fridays, 6–8 p.m., at The Hive in San Jacinto. Online training: wherever you are.

I thought old-school Japanese Jiu-Jitsu might be outdated. Then Vince Cecere started folding me into positions I couldn’t escape.

For 20 minutes, Shihan Vince Cecere demonstrates the joint locks, neck controls, takedowns, pressure points, and painful little details behind American Old School JuJitsu.

Some of these techniques barely look like they should work. Then Vince applies one small adjustment and suddenly my entire body is under his control.

This isn’t sport jiu-jitsu. AOSJ focuses on close-quarters self-defense and controlling a threat quickly, often while staying on your feet.

Watch the full lesson and tell me: Which technique would you want Vince to teach in more detail?

What does realistic knife sparring actually look like?

I spent Friday night at The Hive, Sneak Reaper Industries’ new headquarters in San Jacinto, filming Jarrad Arbuckle’s weekly knife class.

They used training knives with red paint markers to work on footwork, timing, and attacks to the eye line. If someone marked the face shield, that fighter had to put their hands up to simulate how a real eye injury could immediately change the fight. Jarrad would wipe the shield clean, reset them, and the sparring continued.

The Hive is also a place to train, connect with the community, and shop for ELVIA knives, patches, and other gear from Sneak Reaper Industries.

Most people know Dave Schultz from Foxcatcher. Mark Mireles knew him from getting worked over on the wrestling mat.

Mark was only 17 or 18 when he got the chance to wrestle the Olympic champion at Stanford. Schultz put him through a painful lesson, then gave him advice Mark would carry from wrestling into the Marines and law enforcement:

“Mark, I make mistakes too, but my mistakes aren’t as big as your mistakes.”

While showing me this brutal headlock, Mark explains what separates good wrestlers from great ones. Everyone makes mistakes. The difference is how small they are and how quickly you recover.

What is the best lesson a coach ever gave you?

Why does Greco-Roman wrestling seem to produce so many athletes who thrive in MMA?

Mark Mireles breaks down a major difference between Greco and freestyle wrestling: Greco wrestlers already fight from an upright position. That posture can blend naturally with the clinch, Western boxing, Dutch kickboxing, and Muay Thai, while wrestlers who constantly change levels risk eating a knee.

Dan Henderson and Randy Couture are two legendary examples, but what do you think? Is Greco-Roman the best wrestling base for MMA?

Comment DOMINATE and I’ll DM you Mark’s full wrestling video.
