After my stepdad passed, my close friend and colleague @thereallyrizone sent me this. Now if you know me, this is how I am. I have been big into #personaldevelopment, #personalgrowth, and #psychology for nearly two decades, and likely as much as I am into #music.

Without our #mentalhealth in check, nothing else in life has meaning. This is especially true if you are an #artist. A lot of the best art is created by those that are using it to cope. But the key is that whatever you do, don't think of your mental health as an afterthought.

As example, up until my studio was my full time job (almost 20 years), I would push until literal exhaustion for my #goals. 3-6 hours of sleep a night most nights, #wine or #cannabis to sleep, #energydrinks or #coffee to wake back up. Not the best for mental health (or health in general).

My love of brain stuff and tenacity for taking care of myself everywhere else are likely the only reasons I have made it this far. But when I used to crash, I was down for a week or two. My body basically said "Enough. If you won't listen, we're taking the choice away from you."

I wish I could reference who this picture came from originally, as I do not know. But I can tell you that from my life, I've watched this on repeat with myself and others. It may be some of the best advice you'll find.

For me, I have found that #yoga, #meditation, #journaling, #exercise, #reading, water consumption and keeping myself organized all play a part in keeping me balanced. Also friends and family. My artists and my #community. When I stop doing the right things, I notice. A lot.

This isn't to tell you what to do. We all process differently. But the part that *is* important for a healthy life... Find what balances you.

This is a picture of cute irony. And then some.

The moment this happened, I had just spent about two hours journaling after a good chunk of crying. For those that don't know, my stepdad passed Friday morning. His health had been failing for a while, and Friday morning we sat next to him until the end. That still hurts to type.

Many don't make the time to get closure. I do. This last month was the closest he and I have likely been in our lifetime, and I am #grateful that we had the opportunity to grow together. Neither of us continued to carry any baggage, and as we talked, we understood each other more and more. Don't leave things left unsaid. But also be kind. We are all flawed, we all make mistakes, and the one thing that has been lacking in what I see around us is #empathy.

Don't assume you are right. Ask questions. Actually listen to the answers. Try and see things from people's perspectives that you don't agree with. That's what we both did, and as hard as this transition point is, I cherish that more than I can put into words.

Now to liven this back up... In my journal, one thing I mentioned was to get back to being more patient and less reactive. You likely know what I mean as so many things want our attention, and many of them distance us from each other and dehumanize the opposing sides. The opposing side is also a human, and you may not be right. Remember that.

Anyway... Not 30 seconds later, Ivy (the cat pictured) jumps off of my speaker, knocking it to the ground.

We are all tested, constantly. In that moment, my first thought was "REALLY?!" with a brief flash of anger, since if it had been hand written the ink wouldn't have even been dry yet. But I stopped, took a breathe, and laughed. I asked to be patient, and was *immediately* tested. How can I be angry at that #irony?

I'm still a bit mad at her, but it's okay. She has been there for me through a lot over the years. She didn't do it on purpose, and the damage is minimal. But seriously... In less than 30 seconds... ๐Ÿ™„

One thing I love about working with @thereallyrizone is that nothing is off limits. His fans wanted pillows, he had pillows made. He's working on a video game. And here... We have his upcoming hot sauce that we did a commercial for.

And yes... This is a real hot sauce up for pre-order!

With @doomtown_radio doing the performance, we laughed the entire time. And here is the result!

Do you often go into your fridge looking for something to make your life more pleasant and suck less?

Do you feel like the hot sauces that your local retail store sells are a complete abomination to condiments everywhere and they should be burned at the stake?

Well, we have been below ground watching horror movies and concocting the most deliciously devastating sauce known to man. Yet to be fair, when has Lyrizone ever been normal? We wouldn't be surprised if you were caught running down the street crying and laughing at the same time after consuming this.

I think I'm starting to break a bit of new ground. I started writing this about three days ago, and though it's a little rough and disjointed, I think the main idea is feeling good.

It's interesting that I'm just now starting to feel a bit like I know what I'm doing. Still hitting wrong notes more than I'd like, but far less than I was. Still having to remember transitions, but it's still new and being written.

Progress. And remember that it's not too late to learn something new. I only started this a few years ago, and it's still not been my primary focus until more recently. I'm nowhere near where I want to be, but I do feel like I've gained a lot of traction. Consistent practice is part. But try to design it right. You don't just want to enjoy the goal. You want to love the process.

Interview now up on #spotify, #youtube, etc., of @notebook.contempt interviewed by @thereallyrizone on the @musicianspasspodcast - both artists I know and love, and since we record them here, I get to promote it further!

If you are an up and coming artist, these guys have some solid knowledge and fun personalities to go with it. You can learn by the school of hard knocks, but you can also learn from those that came before you. I've done both... Many times. ๐Ÿคฃ

A rare non music related post. Let's go for #humor based in real life!

One of the things I've had more of over the years is #bananas. Good for you, quick snack, etc.

But when you visit a friend and have that banana with other snacks that deteriorate much slower.... And you forget them in the car for a few days afterwards while outside it's 115 degrees out... Well, let's just say that they don't stay soft.

Remember to remove your fruits from the car before they become hard enough to be weapons. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฃ

One of the things I love about where my life is at involves the artists I work with. I've been working with both of these gentlemen for many years, and this was where the two of them got to meet and see why I respect both of them so much.

They don't just release songs... They dig into the business, the marketing, have exceptional work ethic, and both I have no doubt that where they are now (with hundreds of thousands of streams each and building their artistry as brands) that both will continue to show us how its done. There is a wealth of knowledge, laughs, and fun in this podcast, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Oh... And you'll be seeing more from both of them soon. Let's just say we've all been working on some plans together...

I wrote the bulk of this song over the last year or two, but haven't known where to take it after a certain point. But in my last few days of practicing and writing, I have a rough ending to build from and maybe, just maybe, I can actually have a fully written song on piano soon.

I have a lot of little segments, but as I grow in writing and playing ability, dots are being connected and playing #piano is becoming more and more natural. My mistakes in this may not showcase that, but I can tell you that the light anxiety moving hand positions in is starting to be a dull annoyance and not just "You're screwing it up!". That's a nice change. ๐Ÿ˜€

I've been dabbling with piano for years, but really I could only play a handful of things out of muscle memory. It was like tracing vs drawing. It looked good, ish, but it was just trying to replicate. Now, even as I replicate, I'm building feel and my own sense of dynamics. That transition is in the early stage, but it's nice that through all of the struggle not enjoying playing while building finger strength and muscle memory, finally I actually *enjoy* playing.

Good things rarely come easy, and it's not overnight. It takes #dedication, #practice, and #commitment - and for long stints of not feeling like it's going anywhere. The plateaus are real. But eventually, with enough dedication, you break that plateau. And there are few things in life more gratifying than breaking down those barriers.

Don't look at obstacles as problems. Look at them as tools for building yourself up.

As #jimrohn said: "Don't wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don't wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Don't wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom.โ€

Let's break down those barriers together.

Another new #piano piece that I wrote today. Now that I am getting the main ideas and my brain is recalling faster for finger placement, I'm coming up with more and more #songwriting... Not terrible since I've really only been doing it on this instrument for a short time.

Remember to value the progesss, not just the end. The journey is a lot of the enjoyment when done right!

Don't mind our #goodwill donation bags by the door... ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜€

Our Story

Congratulations on finding Green Light Studios!
