OPERAWIRE: In December 2024, when Bolivian-Albanian soprano Carolina López Moreno sang the role of Magda in “La Rondine,” the London Symphony critics proclaimed “A Star is Born.” Those performances marked the start of an international career for the BolivianAlbanian soprano, who would go on to make unexpected debuts at the Semperoper Dresden, Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Royal Opera House. She also made unexpected debuts at the Teatro Carlo Felice and Teatro San Carlo. Since then, López Moreno has performed at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Opera Menorca, Teatro Regio di Torino, and Festival Puccini Torre del Lago, among many important theaters.

The soprano has also become known for her Italian repertoire especially her Puccini roles like “Madama Butterfly,” and “La Bohème” as well as her Verdi roles Alice Ford in “Falstaff,” Violetta Valéry in “La Traviata,” and Leonora “Il Trovatore.”

She opened the 2025-26 season at the Teatro Massimo di Palermo and is set to return to the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino this season. She also sings at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Gran Teatre del Liceu, New National Theatre of Tokyo, and Festispielhaus Baden-Baden.

MIAMI HERALD: Maria Todaro resented the political science and law degrees her parents pushed her to get. She wanted to be an opera singer like her parents, not a lawyer or businesswoman. Now, Todaro, an accomplished singer, stage director, fight choreographer and arts entrepreneur is stepping into her biggest role yet, ushering in an ambitious rebrand for Florida’s oldest opera company as the Florida Grand Opera’s new general director. “I was telling my my parents at the time, ‘Who cares about that? Why do I have to do law school?’ And now, years later, it makes sense,” she said. “It’s like everything I’ve ever done in my life was for this.”

Todaro joined Florida Grand Opera, the oldest producing arts organization in Florida and the seventh-oldest opera company in the United States, in October as interim general director after her predecessor Susan T. Danis left the company after 11 years at the helm. Late last month, FGO announced that Todaro would continue as general director with a three-year contract to “infuse new energy” into the 82-year-old company. Board chair Tina Vidal-Duart called it “an exciting new era for FGO.”

“In collaboration with my board and my team, we want to do everything,” Todaro said. “We have a huge, huge vision for this company.”

Vidal-Duart said the board has been pleased with the change Todaro has brought to the company in such a short amount of time. The feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, Vidal-Duart said. She added that some individuals who felt that the company “had grown a little stale” and stopped attending FGO performances are now coming back. The board hopes this new wave of energy will bring more fundraising opportunities for the opera company, which is a nonprofit.

FOR THOSE CUBANS IN THE NY & NJ AREAS! - CUBAN-AMERICAN SOPRANO LISETTE OROPESA AT Carnegie Hall Presents - The Met Orchestra -Tuesday, June 11, 2024 @ 8PM - Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage - Experience the famous versatility of The Met Orchestra as Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Brahms’s First Symphony, two of Mozart’s great arias, and a recent work by one of today’s most celebrated composers. Jessie Montgomery’s unifying “Hymn for Everyone” came to her as a revelation—a rare sensation for the composer—and was premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2022. The agile voice of world-renowned soprano Lisette Oropesa shines in significant concert arias by Mozart. Grand in its scope as well as its themes, Brahms’s First Symphony is a heroic work, the culmination of decades of preparation and years of labor by a master
+ Lisette Oropesa (born September 29, 1983) is an American operatic soprano of Cuban ancestry.[1] Her repertoire includes works from Gluck, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Wagner, Verdi, Bizet, Massenet, Bellini and Puccini. With her lyric coloratura soprano voice,[2] she has performed roles in her native Spanish and English, as well as German, French and Italian. She is particularly noted in the roles of Susanna, Gilda, Konstanze, Lucia and Manon.

Oropesa was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her parents emigrated from Cuba.[2]

She originally studied to be a flautist before her mother, a music teacher and former operatic soprano,[2] suggested she audition for the voice faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Music.[6] She joined the voice program under the guidance of Robert Grayson[7] who was the chair of the Voice/Opera at the LSU School of Music
