Ed Travis Nails The USGA

According to the recently released USGA and R&A Distance Insights Report (DIR) golfers (including you) hit the ball too far and future distance increases must be stopped by “rolling back” equipment performance.

The DIR effectively draws a line in the sand but did not say what would be changed nor indeed if anything at all would be done however the implication is clear and quoting from the Report’s conclusion: “This report clearly shows a consistent increase in hitting distance and golf course lengths over the last 100-plus years. These increases have had a profound impact on costs to build, modify and operate golf courses and they have impacted golfers at all levels. We believe this problem will continue unless this cycle is brought to an end. With collaboration from the entire golf community, we have an opportunity to stem this tide and help ensure golf remains sustainable and enjoyable for generations to come.”

Play Golf To Avoid An Early Grave! Scientists Find Players Of The Sport Face HALF The Risk Of A Premature Death Because ‘It Helps Alleviate Stress’

Golf reduces the risk of a premature death by half, according to new research.
A study of nearly 6,000 people found those who played at least once a month were much more likely to be alive a decade later.
Scientists said the sport – famously described as ‘a good walk spoiled’ by American author Mark Twain – is ‘a hole in one’ for older adults’ health.
Lead author Professor Adnan Qureshi said golf can provide benefits such as stress reduction, and is easy to maintain regularly because it is not exhausting.

Acushnet’s Union Green – Not About Birdies

Acushnet Holdings Corp. (GOLF: NYSE) has two franchise brands, Titleist and FootJoy, that dominate in their respective market segments, golf balls and golf shoes. In the ball business Acushnet’s Pro V1 and Pro V1x are the industry standard played by roughly two-thirds of professionals on the PGA Tour and probably an even higher portion of elite amateurs.

But (you know there’s always a “but”) evidently among the prime demographic target millennial golfers, described as young, occasional players, the brand is perceived as not “cool.” Never one to back away from a challenge, Acushnet is aiming at these millennials with a new ball brand called Union Green and building an image around it nothing like the traditional somewhat staid aura of Pro V1 nor the “It’s All About Distance” of their lower cost Pinnacle.

Streamsong Resort Re-Grassing With Revolutionary Mach 1

Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Fla., is launching a special enhancement project in 2020 to re-grass each of the greens on its Streamsong Blue golf course with a revolutionary new ultradwarf bermudagrass called Mach 1. With this project, Streamsong will become the first golf destination in the world to showcase Mach 1 on an 18-hole layout.

Rusty Mercer, director of agronomy at Streamsong Resort, said the resort will manage the re-grassing project in phases, beginning in April 2020, to avoid guest disruption and offer all 54-holes of golf during the high demand periods between October and March. Streamsong Blue greens will be replanted with Mach 1 in April with grow-in extending through September. Streamsong Red greens will follow the same process in 2021.

Note the name: Boca Rio Golf Club. Unlike many South Florida clubs, Boca Rio – tucked away in western Boca Raton – is all about golf. There are no million-dollar homes lining the fairways; no pool, no spa, no movie theater, no “country club’’ in its name. The two tennis courts are seldom used.

“It’s a club that’s generally for people who love golf,’’ Boca Rio Golf Club President Paul Shapiro said. “That means they really enjoy golf and want to play a lot of golf. We are intentionally a small club.’’

Pardon My Pants - Should Spandex Leggings Be Allowed On A Golf Course?

Awhile back, a fluffy article from 2015 about spandex leggings on the golf course made the rounds again, and my flippant retweet caused some strong reactions in 280 characters or less.

It seemed most of those reactions assumed the author was advocating for the fashion trend, but that wasn’t the case; he was definitely against it. His reasoning was a bit shaky – citing one photo of one woman wearing one company’s pants in a gym, therefore making those pants ONLY gym attire – but his ultimate conclusion was that they didn’t belong on the course. I disagree in some situations, but more on that later.
