We know this view! 👋Spirit Mound!

When the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped near the mouth of the Vermillion River on August 24th, 1804, they saw a lone hill to the north. The local legend told them not to go near the hill because of the evil spirits who lived there. However, their scientific curiosity got the better of them, so the next day, a party from the expedition ventured north through the sweltering, August 25th heat to arrive at what they suspected was a man-made mound.

Upon reaching the summit, they looked out over the vast plains covered in buffalo and the endless sea of grasses swaying in the slight breeze. Lewis and Clark utilized their geology training to investigate the makeup of the hill. To their surprise, it was determined that the mound was composed of the same material as the surrounding area, and they were able to conclude that the mound was a natural phenomenon. This conclusion is supported by later research explaining that Spirit Mound was created as the result of glacial deposits!

In their journals, Captains Lewis and Clark documented this visit to Spirit Mound extensively. Because of this, and its significance as a spiritual Native American site, generations that followed were inspired to restore the site to a native prairie, which allows us to enjoy a peaceful connection with nature, today.

The 2025 Vermillion Burger Battle is officially over, and the results are in!
