Female Snapping turtles take between 8-16 years old to lay their first set of eggs… because of this, they are incredibly important.
This girl was on our dirt road down the street. We don’t get much traffic, and when the turtles are “in the zone” you don’t move them (Our family has always moved turtles off the road and always will). Heading back from the store, she was on the opposite side of the road laying another nest. Out of the way, not in any danger.
A few hours later my husband left to drive down the street, and found her on the opposite side of the road… almost home, squished. She was on the side of the road, on the shoulder where someone would have had to deliberately drive over her to squish her😔..
We are not a busy street, MAYBE, a handful of times a month, you will drive down the street at the same time someone is heading the opposite direction. They had time to slow down, they had a chance to move the car over just a tad… and they choose not too. 💔
I get that sometimes things are unavoidable, but it doesn’t take much to slow down, on a dirt road, that has hardly any traffic…
