Started wrapping my hives for winter. As most of you know honeybees do not hibernate, they cluster together in a tight ball to create heat , the center of that ball can be 90 degrees. The heat they create also contains moisture which needs to exit the hive which is why I have ventilation holes near the top of the hives. My girls in the last pic are showing you one.

Almost finished with spinning honey! I've got a pretty good variety on the cart now. Enjoy 🐝🐝

Bee bread and cut comb honey.Bee bread is pollen that is covered with nectar, honey, bee saliva and enzymes, the pollen being encased as such then ferments which makes the nutrients of the pollen more digestible to the bee. It's delicious, I love finding it when I'm extracting honey. Cut comb honey which I find 90% of people don't know what it is or how to consume it 😆, is honey in its natural state in beeswax. You can chew and swallow the honey and wax together. Your Grandparents probably had this more than liquid honey. Every now and then I have one out on the cart but I really don't produce enough of it, more for family.

Busy day in the beeyard yesterday!! Pulled 40 boxes of honey in the morning and spent the rest of the day with a New York State Bee inspector inspecting my colonies. Very professional and thorough inspection, he being one of only 4 inspectors that cover the State of New York you can understand how busy he is, as he is tasked with keeping bee colonies free from disease ....and yes I passed 😊

Golden rod season is over and aster is not far behind.3 days ago the bees were not bothering me when I pulled honey. Today I pulled into my barn with a load of honey and barely was able to get it in. Anything that smells of honey and wax is fair game, we're now into robbing season. Hives that are weak will be plundered, ensuring only strong colonies enter the winter season. These boxes pictured had a small amount of honey in them so I left them for the bees it didn't take 10 mins for this mob to appear

So this first pic with the bees is exactly what you want to see when you lift off the top cover of the hive, lots of bees on top of the inner cover. This is a big hive with several boxes so that's a lot of bees and honey! Which leads to my second pic 🍯, a beautiful day to just go out and pull a few boxes of honey!!

So when you see thousands of bees flying all day long it's easy to think your hives are strong, as is the case in this yard but what you have to remember is there is a parasite that is working hard to weaken these hives. That parasite is the Varroa mite I've been treating my hives for mites since the spring using organic treatments(oxalic acid and formic acid) These pics I took today after yesterday's treatment , the goal is to go into winter with the lowest possible mite load possible. I know it's not a pretty pic of a bee on a flower, but this is a big part of beekeeping, maintaining healthy hives.
