Joaquin, our Head of HR & Safety, recently traveled to Chile to visit a few of our partner growers as part of a social responsibility initiative with ALDI. These visits give us the opportunity to connect face-to-face, learn from one another, and ensure that high standards for worker well-being are upheld across our global network. A recent study revealed a powerful link between citrus consumption and emotional well-being through the gut-brain connection. Those who ate the most citrus had a 22% lower risk of depression. The real breakthrough? Scientists uncovered why citrus makes such a difference.

Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits help boost levels of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii — a beneficial gut microbe that supports serotonin and dopamine production, key neurotransmitters for mood and mental health. This microbe is consistently lower in people with depression, but the more citrus in the diet, the more it thrives.

Finding better ways to support the people and systems that keep our harvests moving is an ongoing priority.

One recent step: developing a mobile app that uses unique barcoded tickets to track each field box by picker. It’s a small shift that has improved accuracy, reduced paperwork, and simplified payroll. The geolocation data collected with each scan also gives us deeper insight into grove performance and productivity.

By building tools like this in-house, we’re creating more flexibility, transparency, and long-term resilience across our harvesting operations.

Let’s take a minute to thank this crew! After Hurricane Milton caused major damage, this team stepped up. In just six months, they rebuilt and reinforced one of our CUPS (Citrus Under Protective Screen), doubling the poles, adding top cables, replacing the roof, and reinstalling 85% of the walls. All while working in the summer heat.

Our newest CUPS project is a a living science experiment, designed to explore, test, and learn.

🌱 We’re trialing two different pole configurations across 25 acres: one with standard screens at 30x30 ft, and the other staggered with 15x15 ft tie-downs to minimize seams and potential hurricane damage.

🌱 Our Ruby Red grapefruit is budded onto four different rootstocks to evaluate performance and longevity in varying conditions.

🌱 We’re also testing Opti-Net as a method to block thrips and reduce the need for inputs.

Every detail is part of a bigger vision to support the evolution of Florida citrus. We're energized by the possibilities and excited to share what we discover. 🤓

We’ve successfully sown our summer cover crops, and seedlings are already emerging across the groves. These crops play an important role in improving soil health, suppressing weeds, and preventing erosion on our sandy hills. In the months ahead, they’ll create a living layer that protects and nourishes our groves naturally.

As spring fades in Florida, we shift our focus to the small fruitlets still hanging on the trees. These are the ones that will shape our fall harvest. 🍊

Citrus trees naturally drop fruit in three phases: right after the bloom, again around June, and just before harvest. It’s the tree’s way of focusing energy on the strongest fruit. Only a small number of blooms make it to maturity, so giving the trees the care they need now is key to a healthy, high-quality crop later on.
