Cherokee Nation Summer Youth Leadership interns introduced

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr., Deputy Principal Chief Bryan Warner, Secretary of State Shella Bowlin and Deputy Secretary of State Canaan Duncan recently spoke with Cherokee Nation Summer Youth Leadership interns, who come from all across the reservation. Cherokee leaders spoke about the importance of this internship program and answered questions from the interns, ranging from career advice to how to become a better public speaker. These 15 interns will work across the tribe this summer, learning all the facets of tribal government and the chance to learn more Cherokee history and culture.

From fighter jets to famous limos, Vian man reflects on life well lived

At first glance, Tim Turman describes himself as just “an old redneck from Vian,” but behind the humble introduction is a lifetime filled with stories that stretch from small-town Oklahoma to celebrities, royalty and military service.

Turman, 65, has called Vian home for more than five decades after moving to the community in 1972. A 1979 graduate of Vian High School who later attended OSU-Okmulgee, Turman said his journey after graduation quickly took him far beyond Sequoyah County.

Chambers succumbs to injuries after near-drowning incident

A boating-related incident on Kerr Reservoir has now resulted in a fatality, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP).

Richard Chambers, 47, of Sallisaw, died at around 6 p.m. on June 5, following injuries sustained in a near-drowning incident that occurred on May 30 at about 7:38 p.m. on Kerr Reservoir in Sequoyah County.

Governor Stitt signs ‘Bell to Bell, No Cell’ bill into law

OKLAHOMA CITY (May 21, 2026) - Governor Kevin Stitt signed into law a permanent, statewide “Bell to Bell, No Cell” policy, delivering on a commitment he has championed to get phones out of Oklahoma classrooms.

The new law requires Oklahoma school districts to adopt policies prohibiting student cell phone use on campus during the school day, with common sense exceptions for emergencies and documented medical needs.
