An 8-year Oklahoma State University study found that removing eastern redcedars increased soil water storage by 1.6 times and increased runoff by 4.5 times. In a state where drought is a constant challenge, that’s significant.

But water is only part of the story.

Eastern redcedars are one of Oklahoma’s greatest wildfire threats. Their dense growth and highly flammable oils can turn a routine grass fire into a fast-moving, intense wildfire that threatens homes, livestock, wildlife, and entire communities.

They also crowd out native grasses, reduce grazing capacity, and slowly transform productive rangeland into cedar thickets.

The challenge is that cedar removal is expensive. Mechanical removal, prescribed fire, and ongoing management require a significant investment of time and money. Many landowners know the problem exists, but tackling thousands of cedars across a property can be a daunting and costly task.

Yet the long-term benefits are clear: healthier grasslands, more available water, improved wildlife habitat, increased forage production, and reduced wildfire risk.

Good stewardship isn’t always cheap, but it’s one of the best investments we can make in the future of Oklahoma’s land.

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across portions of western and central Oklahoma this afternoon and evening, including Dewey County.

⏰ Timing for Dewey County:
• Storms could begin as early as 3 PM
• Most likely window: 4 PM – 7 PM
• Severe weather threat should end by 10 PM

⚠️ Main Hazards:
• Large hail up to hen egg size
• Damaging wind gusts up to 75 mph
• A very low tornado risk cannot be ruled out

While not everyone will see severe weather, any storm that develops could quickly become severe. Have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially if you have outdoor plans this evening.

The missing juvenile has been located safe and reunited with family.

🚨 MISSING JUVENILE — PLEASE SHARE

With permission from his mother, Amber Bennett, we are sharing this information to help locate Lincoln Bennett, who is missing in Woodward.

Family members say Lincoln left a residence around 6:30 p.m. and did not have his phone with him. Law enforcement has been notified.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Woodward Police Department at 580-254-8518 immediately.
