Think You Need More Storage? Think Again
Spring cleaning is here, and it's the perfect time to declutter. As a professional home organizer, I often hear “I don’t have enough storage,” followed by plans to renovate or rent a storage unit. However, after a proper declutter and reorganization, most people find that their homes actually have room for everything as-is. If you want to declutter your home, here are some tried-and-true tips:Focus on one room at a time. It’s fine if other rooms get messier in the process; it’s better to end the day with one room 100% organized than 5 rooms 20% organized. Before you start, set up boxes labeled: trash, donate, relocate, and unsure. Come back to the ‘unsure’ box at the end so you don’t get sidetracked by small details. Enlist support—ask a friend to body double or chat on the phone while you sort, plan a family declutter day, or hire a professional organizer.Add shelving in storage areas to make the most of vertical space and keep stored items visible and accessible—this immediately frees up floor space.Label bins and shelves so everyone knows where things belong—this reduces decision fatigue and keeps systems working long-term.Happy spring cleaning! Don’t hesitate to call Acorn & Oak Organizing if you need non-judgmental, hands-on support. For more information call 678.829.4843 or visit acornoakorganizing.com.

Recently, I photographed Marvin of cowboymarvin.com at his happy place — Exodus Ranch in Douglasville. Seeing him with his horse on the ranch reminded me how important it is for all of us to have a place where we can slow down and enjoy life. It made me think about my “Home Sweet Happy Place” editorial in our March issue of News & Views. Sometimes our happy place is closer than we think — a front porch, backyard patio, garden, workshop, or a quiet spot inside the home.

Because the idea resonated with so many readers, we’re hoping to expand “Home Sweet Happy Place” into a new section in the magazine featuring spaces, ideas, and businesses that help people enjoy their homes even more.

What’s your Home Sweet Happy Place? Email a photo if you'd like to [email protected].

And if you’re a contractor or home service business that takes pride in helping people create spaces they love at home, I’d enjoy hearing about your craft as we build out this new section. Email me at [email protected].

Realtor and News & Views advertiser Sandra Harvey has this beautiful custom home on the market. While photographing it, I spotted our March issue of News & Views sitting on the coffee table. Fitting, since March's editorial is about “Home Sweet Happy Place.” If you get a chance, check out the article on page 37 to see how to submit a photo of your at-home happy place for us to publish on one of our channels.
