Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, the news didn’t reach Texas until June 19th, 1865. Therefore, Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of those who were still enslaved in the United States. The first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas on June 19th, 1866, and we celebrate it since.

In light of the ongoing violence and the continued injustices plaguing our nation, we would like to make our film available for free to the public to provide another resource and space for people to discuss the issues of race and identity. We completed Sankofa two years ago but it could have been made yesterday because nothing has changed in our country. As we share the message of the film, our team would like to encourage continued dialogue by hosting a live zoom Q&A this weekend.

The events during the past week have weighed heavily on our hearts, and on many in the nation and around the world. There are no words to convey what the right way to feel and process all of this is. But we, as Riptide Pictures, stand together to fight against the injustices in our world, to amplify the voices of those not heard, and to shine a light on stories that have been dimmed. This has always been our goal, from the moment ‘Sankofa’ was born in 2017.

Join us in learning, processing, and acting. Change needs to happen NOW! And it cannot happen without every single one of us.
