Michigan Central Station is one of those places where the more you look, the more stories you find!

Originally opened in 1913, Michigan Central was built for the Vanderbilt-controlled Michigan Central Railroad and designed by the same architectural team behind Grand Central Terminal in New York. It was the tallest train station in the world when it opened.

While I was there, I learned about so many details I would have otherwise overlooked:

The train companies actually named their trains. The Mercury ran to New York, the Maple Leaf to Toronto, and the Wabash Cannonball to Chicago.

The massive windows once operated vertically using a system of gears and chains. They no longer function, and the windows you see today aren’t the originals, but Ford chose to preserve much of the original hardware.

The floor is original, and the terracotta ceiling is believed to be as well. The chandeliers were replaced during the restoration, Bill Ford and his wife signed one of them.

Then there’s the next chapter: Ford acquired Michigan Central in 2018 and invested roughly $1 billion into bringing this incredible building back to life.

There are also two new touches: a Michigan-shaped outline incorporated into the station wall, representing the state as a whole. And three large screens in the main area originally marked entrances to the train tunnels.

There’s even a third-floor story about a possible future hotel...

It’s easy to see it as just a beautiful old train station. But knowing the history behind the details makes Michigan Central feel like something even more special.
