Kapoho Ocean Entry ~ 06/26/18 ~ Cotton-candy colored laze and a fireworks of lava in the predawn light. It sometimes feels hard to reconcile how something so destructive could be so beautiful. Lava art is especially powerful to me because of the dynamic conflict of creation and destruction, beauty and horror, heartbreak and transcendence, death and rebirth.

Life Force

In the Hawaiian religion, Pele is the goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes. Certain historians have written that the ancient traditions reveal her as having an impetuous, l***y nature, at times gentle and loving, but always jealous and unpredictable, capable of great fury and violence.

Tutu Pele, however, is Hawaii's greatest creator. She is life force herself.

"Creation"

On New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2016, a large section of the 26-acre lava delta at the Kamokuna Ocean Entry collapsed into the sea. Since then waterfalls of light have been pouring into the Pacific from an exposed lava tube.

Lava deltas are highly unstable and form unexpectedly when lava enters the sea and forges new land on loose substrate.

When lava flow reaches the ocean, contact with the water causes both rapid cooling of the lava and steam explosions that fragment it. The glassy fragments that are formed, known as hyaloclastites, fall down to the seabed forming foresets.

Foresets then carry flows further offshore across the topography of adjacent seabeds.

Living one miracle to the next.

My Uncle and I saw this little guy, who was only a few days old, in the Galapagos on one of our photographic expeditions.

He seemed like a Freddie.
