Thanks to donations, food shelf volunteers packed over 150 bags of food, enough to meet growing demand through the first two weeks of November, reported Executive Director Angie Cruzen. Emergency food bags are being supplied to the Waconia and Watertown libraries, as well as the Watertown-Mayer and Norwood Young America school districts.

With the federal government still shut down as of Friday and federal SNAP benefits set to expire Nov. 1, philanthropy and local food programs were left to fill the void

“More broadly, we are seeing an overall impact on operations — both in terms of increased demand from those shopping with us and food sourcing challenges,” said Patti Sinykin, executive director of Bountiful Basket serving Chaska, Cologne and surrounding areas.

Cuts to SNAP to and Medicaid, along with new requirements for those programs could affect up to 5,000 many families countywide, she explains, which could turn them to the food shelf if they aren’t already utilizing those services. Meanwhile, cuts in The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) are also affecting food sourcing from local food banks.

As the federal government shutdown entered its third week, the Associated Press has been reporting impacts on everything from air travel, to parks and tourism, to health and food assistance
