For 135 years, The Anson Record and the Messenger and Intelligencer has served the people of Anson County as their primary source of news, as well as a guide to satisfy the community’s appetite for goods and services through advertising of local merchants. The Anson Record traces its heritage back to 1881, as the Messenger and Intelligencer, but the modern Anson Record was first published on Jan.
20, 1955. The Record, Messenger and Intelligencer were combined in 1979. The paper was purchased by Heartland Publications, LLC on Sept. 1, 2006. Six years later, venture capital firm Versa Capital Management merged Heartland with two other newspaper chains to form Civitas Media, which is headquartered in the Charlotte suburb of Davidson.
