Very sad news today. Uncle Willie K once told me he wanted to come on my radio show and play Tanzanian witch music. I'm sorry we never got that opportunity. RIP my braddah!

Legendary Maui Musician and Hawaiian music icon Willie K died on Monday night after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 59. A message to his fans notes he passed away in his home in Wailuku, surrounded by his ʻohana.

Mana'o Radio Brings New Orleans Jazz & Heritage to Hawaii!

We are honored to be simulcasting the Heritage Jazz and Blues Festival on Mana'o Radio this week. Below are some comments from our long-time DJ Dorothy Betz:

"OZ," as it's called, is one of the very first stations to go on the air as an independent, non-profit, non-commercial radio station under the new FCC rules that went into effect in the early 90's. (Bob Dylan is on record as stating that it's his all-time favorite station.) This is the same window of opportunity that Barry and Kathy Collins used to start Mana'o Radio. Millions if people listen to OZ either in New Orleans or online. So in a sense she is our sister station. Only a few stations will be receiving this feed, and we are lucky to be one of them. OZ will be announcing us to the world as one of the participants, and we are likely to gain multitudes of listeners because of this opportunity.

The Heritage Jazz and Blues Festival is a huge deal worldwide! Thousands of people travel long distances to see this event, and millions more listen to it in the internet, buy OZ's live CD's of the event, and follow the musicians who play. We are so privileged to be part if this world class event!
