High on Haleakalā, goats once threatened fragile species like the silversword and pushed seabirds from their nesting grounds. In the 1980s, crews took on a massive task: build a fence around the summit to give the ecosystem a chance to heal.

Today, more than 85 miles of fencing protect native plants and wildlife — proof of what persistence and care can restore.

Maui Midweek View
Nestled along the rugged cliffs of ʻOheʻo Gulch in Hāna, the Seven Sacred Pools, also known as the Pools of ʻOheʻo, collect rainwater from Haleakalā before cascading into the ocean. With more than seven pools connected by a series of waterfalls, this natural wonder is one of the jewels of Haleakalā National Park in the Kīpahulu District.

A short hike on the Kuloa Point Trail brings you to this breathtaking spot. Whether swimming is open or not, the view itself is unforgettable. Mahalo to the park staff who keep this special place pristine for all to enjoy.

Hawaiian word of the week: Hana — Work, labor, or to do.

Hana reminds us that work is more than a daily task — it is the effort, care, and purpose we put into everything we do. As we celebrate Labor Day weekend, hana calls us to honor the value of hard work while also embracing balance, rest, and gratitude.
