Over the weekend, the lives of two young leaders in the gun violence prevention movement—Azir Harris and Meeyah Smith—were stolen in senseless shootings.

After he was paralyzed in a shooting in 2018, Azir turned his pain into advocacy. He encouraged his community in Philadelphia to resolve conflicts peacefully and put guns down. Azir was “giving, kind, and everything to [his] family.” He was the father of a one-year-old boy, who is now forced to grow up without his dad.

Meeyah was a member of Englewood First Responders, an organization that works to prevent gun violence by performing acts of service in Chicago. She joined the program to give back to her community. Friends say she “was one of a kind. She didn’t deserve what happened to her. She was special.”

Meeyah and Azir were passionate young advocates who had bright futures ahead. Our hearts break for their loved ones and communities forced to mourn them. In their honor, we’ll continue to push for investment and support for young people to live their lives, free from the threat of gun violence.
