Hawaii School Faces Backlash Over 'Biased' Political Materials
2024-11-05
Kapolei Middle School in Kapolei faced backlash from angry parents after it was revealed that their children were being exposed to 'biased' political materials at the hands of teachers that showed former US president and Republican leader D. Trump in a negative light. The document mentioned that D. Trump 'tried to overturn the 2020 election,' and even accused the Republican presidential nominee of taking immigrant 'children away from their parents.' On the other hand, the document spoke highly of his Democratic rival K. Harris, praising her for working to 'keep our country a democracy.' Parents were quick to criticise this new political 'awareness' campaign by the school authorities.

Controversial Presidential Candidate Lesson at Kapolei Middle School
2024-11-04
The race for the White House is reaching local classrooms in Hawaii, and one lesson at Kapolei Middle School has some parents raising their eyebrows. The controversy is over a two-page document that was handed out to classrooms, which broke down where the U.S. presidential candidates -- Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump -- stand on the issues. The state Department of Education confirms the document was put together by a group of teachers at the school who simplified the information in a candidate comparison article in the New York Times. The lesson is upsetting some parents who felt it was biased against the former president. The Hawaii DOE said the intent was to encourage independent thinking and discussion among students, not to promote any particular view.
