If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I spend a LOT of time traveling up and down the Oregon Coast, talking with fishermen, chefs, seafood businesses and the people who make our coastal food systems work. But being part of a food system also means talking about who has access to that food.
In Port Orford, I met up with commercial fisherman Phillip Russman, who shared his own experience with hunger as a child and how that experience influences him today, including donating some of his catch to his community. I also visited The Common Good Food Bank to learn more about what food access looks like in this small, rural fishing town.
Hunger isn’t a personal failure. It’s connected to the systems around us, including jobs, wages, housing, healthcare and the rising cost of simply getting by.
And in communities that harvest and produce so much of the food we love, no one should have to go hungry.
I’m grateful to Oregon Food Bank for the work they do across Oregon and proud to use my little corner of the internet to help this September. 💚
