Newport Performing Arts Center to screen “Twenty Years of the Met in Cinemas” anniversary celebration in HD

NEWPORT, OR: Coast Council for the Arts (OCCA) will present “Twenty Years of the Met in Cinemas,” a special anniversary screening celebrating two decades of the Metropolitan Opera’s groundbreaking Live in HD series, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at 10:00 am, on the big screen in Newport Performing Arts Center’s Alice Silverman Theatre.

Originally recorded live on the Metropolitan Opera stage in New York, the encore presentation, hosted by acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming, will showcase highlights drawn from the Met’s archive of more than 185 on-screen performances broadcast to theaters worldwide since the series began. The program brings together unforgettable moments from some of opera’s most celebrated stars, including Lise Davidsen, Natalie Dessay, Joyce DiDonato, Elīna Garanča, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Jonas Kaufmann, Peter Mattei, Matthew Polenzani, Sondra Radvanovsky, Nadine Sierra, and Fleming herself, among many others.

Tickets for the anniversary screening range from $14 to $30, with discounts available for students, seniors, and OCCA members. Tickets can be purchased at the Newport Performing Arts Center box office, by phone at (541) 265-2787, or online (surcharge). Visit coastarts.org/met for more information.

The screening also marks the start of OCCA’s 2026–2027 Met Opera Live in HD season. Season subscriptions, priced between $181 and $209, include nine Met Opera events running from September 2026 through June 2027. Subscribers may also add three “Special Encore” performances — The Magic Flute, Carmen, and Tosca — for $19 each.

The Met: Live in HD is an award-winning series of live, high-definition cinema simulcasts. Oregon Coast audiences can enjoy the beauty, grandeur, and excitement of world-class opera, broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera stage directly to Newport Performing Arts Center’s big screen in Ultra HD — and savor every delicious note through the unrivaled sound quality of the center’s state-of-the-art Meyer Constellation Acoustic System. The Newport Harbor Triathlon is happening this Sunday morning, Sept. 20! Approximately 400 competitors of all ages will swim, bike, and run their way through Newport. If you’re driving, please slow down, use caution, and watch for participants along the course. We encourage using alternate routes if possible. And if you’re free, come out and cheer them on!
