Housing fund chief made 700,000 pesos a month but 'extravagance is over'

The former head of the national housing fund, Infonavit, paid himself a handsome salary — because he could.
Speaking in Guerrero yesterday at a presentation on the national fertilizer program, President López Obrador repeated that excesses in government spending will no longer be tolerated, and used the former Infonavit chief as an example.
David Penchyna, the president said, earned a gross monthly salary of 700,000 pesos (US $37,000). His successor, on the other hand, is receiving substantially less.

45 more Tamaulipas factories threaten to go on strike, this time in Reynosa

Workers at 45 factories in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, have threatened to take strike action if they are not given the same pay raise and annual bonus as those given to thousands of workers in Matamoros.

But rather than abruptly walking off the job to demand a 20% salary increase and 32,000-peso (US $1,700) end-of-year bonus, the workers will first seek to negotiate with their employers.

Ex-attorney general of Nayarit pleads guilty in US to drug trafficking

A former attorney general of Nayarit pleaded guilty yesterday to drug trafficking charges in the same New York court where former drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán is on trial.

Édgar Veytia, attorney general of the Pacific coast state between 2013 and 2017, was brought into the Federal District Court in Brooklyn shortly after Guzmán’s trial wrapped up for the week.

He pleaded guilty to accepting payments from drug cartels to help them smuggle co***ne, he**in and methamphetamine into the United States from 2013 until his arrest in San Diego, California, in March 2017.

GM now top automaker - in Mexico

General Motors enters 2019 as the top carmaker in Mexico.

The distinction comes as GM plans to shutter four U.S. manufacturing facilities this year, putting thousands of jobs at risk and drawing political and labor criticism of its decision to produce so many vehicles in Mexico, particularly the new Chevrolet Blazer SUV.

GM’s rise in Mexico is largely because of Nissan scaling back its sedan production there, slipping from the top position.

GM, on the other hand, has been retooling its San Luis Potosi plant and Ramos Arizpe facility in recent years to shift to SUV and pickup production.

GM said its boost in production is to meet the strong demand for SUV and pickups, as sedans have fallen out of buyers’ favor.

Grupo Modelo US$ 756-million brewery is practically completed and ready to go

Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo, subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev, expects to increase its production capacity between 8 and 9% during 2019 with the opening of its eighth plant in Mexico, but also expects to increase its domestic sales at double-digit rates.

In a recent interview with Notimex, the vice president of Corporate Affairs, Andres Gutierrez, said that the brewery, located in Apan, Hidalgo, will have an initial production capacity of 12 million hectoliters, which is equivalent to producing 9.25 million bottles of 355 milliliters each day.

This plant, in which the company invested US$ 756 million, will eventually double its capacity to 24 million hectoliters.

“The plant is practically finished, it is ready to start operations. We have already made some temporary tests (...) we are ready to start 2019 announcing its opening,” he said.

The executive stressed that there is a certain boom in Mexican beer around the world and it is expected to continue, which is why export capacity is increasing. Even, he said, it is feasible to exceed the export volume of Brazil's beer industry.

The plight of Mexico's more than 12 millionindigenous people, who often face inequality, injustice and persecution, has been thrown in the spotlight by the election of leftist leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in July. Lopez Obrador, who campaigned on a platform of "first the poor," has held ceremonies with indigenous leaders and vowed to bring meaningful change to these impoverished rural communities. But as the President turns his focus to major infrastructure projects, there are fears that all the rituals and rhetoric may end in broken promises once again.
The federal government will deploy 4,000 soldiers and marines to guard the nation’s oil refineries and petroleum storage facilities to combat fuel theft, President López Obrador announced today.
