Tellings of this story have been warped for Hollywood and its agenda, as some of Universal’s first monster films included Frankenstein, directed by James Whale, which was released in 1931. Then audiences have a more humorous version of the story with “Young Frankenstein” in 1974, starring the beloved Gene Wilder.

Every year, the Veterans Resource Center at Mt. SAC celebrates the birthday of the Marine Corps and this year was no different. The event serves as a place for students, staff and faculty who are veterans to connect with each other. However, while it is meant to honor the Marine Corp specifically, it is also a way to honor all the branches of the military.

Presented by Dr. Kim-Leiloni T. Nguyen, who just finished a year long sabbatical on AI’s place in the healthcare industry, the workshop painted the picture of assistive, ambient, predictive and agentic AI in the healthcare field. In an interview a few days before the event, Nguyen, who teaches anatomy at Mt. SAC, said of her sabbatical that “AI is going to impact healthcare. Because a lot of the students taking anatomy are pre-healthcare taking the required courses to get into nursing, dental, medicine … AI is a game changer, and I want to know to what extent.”

As the largest state in the union, California will feel the brunt of these cuts. Citizens in every congressional district in the state have a percentage of its residents who participate in the program designed to mitigate hunger of the impoverished and working poor. Known as CalFresh in California, the level of participation ranges from 5.3% in Silicon Valley to almost 29% in the Central Valley. CalBudgetcenter.org shows that during 2024, the citizens of California utilized almost $12.5 billion in CalFresh benefits. The data also goes on to show how much higher the poverty rate would be in each congressional district without the CalFresh benefits.

Fast forward to the 1891 Iranian To***co Boycott, American boycotts of British goods during the revolution (like the Boston Tea Party), the Chinese Exclusion Acts, boycotts of South Africa to protest apartheid and perhaps most notably boycotts stemming from Rosa Park’s arrest which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. It’s clear that historically, not only is boycotting relevant and powerful, it can bring about actual change.
